(Steve) McQueen's Motorcycle (1931 Matchstick Silver Hawk auctions for $47,000)

McQueen's Motorcycle

Jonathan Fairbanks for Artfact

An already rare object combined with a celebrity provenance is usually a recipe for a successful auction. San Francisco-based Bonhams & Butterfields recent offering of one of 1960s film star Steve McQueen's former bikes was no exception as it raced past its pre-sale estimate selling for $47,000, or 47% above the high-end of the estimate.

The Matchstick Silver Hawk first came off the assembly lines in 1931 as a replacement of the Silver Arrow line, and it would ultimately last for only four years. This particular motorcycle was part of the 1933 line and became part of McQueen's noted collection of classic motorcycles. McQueen, the star of films such as The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair and Papillon, died in 1980 at the age of 50.

Artifact Analysis:

Classic cars and motorcycles are one of the fastest growing areas in the antiques and collectibles business. All three major auction houses, as well as hundreds of small auction houses around the world, routinely hold classic-transportation auctions. Exceptional cars can easily bring more than $1 million with a select few actually topping the $5 million barrier. As this market continues to mature, there is little to suggest that prices will fall anytime soon.

Yep, it was a Matchless. At first, I thought it was $47,000 worth of matchsticks from the headline.

What's with the Matchsticks? Maybe a non-cyclist reporter wrote this up.

I bought a 1957 Matchlless 650cc for 700 bucks. Great handling, good power, but...Lucas electrics.

Ah, yes, Lucas, the god of darkness. Now you know why the Brits enjoy warm beer.

HE WAS ROBBED!!!

Conservatively, this could have banged a 6 digit price even if all you were buying were bragging rights! The author admits as much in the last paragraph.

I would guess the new owner will have it back on the auction block, soon, and elsewhere.

Happy Thanksgiving, _fierro & clan!

Wow!

I used to pump gas into Steve McQueens Mercedes Benz down here in South Orange County.

Talked to him on a few occasions, and he seemed like a nice guy.

Although I heard he wasn't the most popular guy in Hollywood.

He would always be on his way home after leaving his buddies house...Bruce (On Any Sunday) Brown.

It's a lot more fun than a Swiss watch. ;)

Say ~ speaking of Matchless', do you have any pix of the fabulous G-50 Matchless racer?

A Berkeley buddy raced one back in the 60's and I got to ride it and it was a real blast. :):)
