Ms. Miers Goes To Washington

If I have heard it once, I have heard it a hundred times by conservative commentators, “When your political opponents are digging themselves deeper and deeper into a hole, don’t get in their way. Don’t do anything to impede them.” By implication when liberals/democrats are digging themselves in deeper and deeper, conservatives/republicans look better and better by comparison.

Today it is the republicans/conservatives who are digging deeper and deeper as well as faster and faster with no end in sight. And talk about making your opponents look better and better by comparison, Wednesday night I saw Howard Dean (of scream fame) on talk TV and he was able to appear reasonable and restrained compared to those conservatives/republicans who oppose Ms. Meirs’ nomination for the Supreme Court. Imagine Howard Dean appearing on national television and appearing reasonable and restrained, it boggles the mind.

Speaking of minds, have we lost ours? Yes we. After all, I consider myself a conservative somewhere to the right of Rush Limbaugh. Still, I am not a Republican by choice, but by default. I consider the Democratic Party, with its current stands on everything from economics to the second amendment to marriage to be a threat to the very foundation of our country.

But I am no country club Republican. I come from strong blue collar roots. My parents are both Democrats – remaining so even today when they are frequently disappointed by their party. I have two brothers who vote a straight Democrat ticket because of their belief (wrong though it is) that Democrats favor the working man.

With all of the elitism being displayed by the right about the Meirs’ nomination, we are doing little to dispel that belief. It is as if we have a new version of the movie “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”. Only now the movie would be “Ms. Smith (Meirs) Gets Nominated to the Supreme Court” and virtually the entire Senate Establishment and their proxies (newspapers, radio, internet) oppose her as an outsider much as it did the original “Mr. Smith”.

Of course in the movie Mr. Smith faced opposition from the entire Senate body, today Ms. Meirs’ opposition is almost entirely from the right. Of course there is opposition from the left as well, but the hysteria along with the volume from the right has virtually drowned out the opposition from the left to date.

I suspect many many Republicans and establishment conservatives are in for a real shock when they find out how many of us ‘regular folk’ in fly-over country have a strong deep support and respect for someone as hardworking and humble as Ms. Miers.

Let me be clear, “I like what I see so far in Ms. Miers as a Supreme Court nominee. I like it very much. Her status as an outsider is something I really like as well.” Barring any significant problems showing up in the hearings I want her confirmed.

I know I will be writing my two senators letting them know how I feel and that I want them to vote to confirm our (flyover’s) very own Ms. Smith/Meirs to the Supreme Court. It is long over due.

If this is not enough to convince you that many find the current wailing and knashing of teeth disgusting try VariFrank's latest post which starts out, "I have never seen this much public squealing and hysterical carrying on since a pinhole camera was discovered in the ’s locker room of my high school."
