BAY POINT - A Concord man struggled with a police dog in a knee-deep marsh, and at one point tried to drown it at the end of a high-speed police pursuit, the California Highway Patrol reported Friday.
The dog bit Justin Sorg, 21, several times during the tussle late Thursday, said CHP spokesman Scott Yox. The canine was not hurt, but Sorg was treated for minor injuries at the County Hospital in Martinez.
The chase began shortly after 11 p.m. when CHP officers tried to pull over a Nissan Sentra that had no license plates. The driver stopped, but when officers walked toward the car, he sped away.
The driver, later identified as Sorg, sped through Pittsburg at 80 to 90 mph and accelerated to 100 mph on Highway 4, Yox said. Sorg exited toward Oakley and then made a U-turn and went back west.
With three cars and a helicopter in pursuit, Sorg drove behind an Antioch business on West Second Street. He lost control of the car, crashed through a fence and rolled over into a ditch.
Sorg ran toward a trail near the Antioch Marina and the department's helicopter lost track of him when he hid in a marsh. Officers sent in the dog to flush him out.
Outdone and bitten several times after fighting with the police animal, Sorg surrendered.
Officers arrested him on suspicion of reckless evasion, resisting arrest, driving with a suspended license and battery against a peace officer. He is being held at the County Jail in Martinez without bond.
Officers learned Friday morning that the Sentra had been stolen from the Dirito Brothers lot in Concord. Police may seek additional charges.
All that and he wasn't even drunk (no DUI charge). What a loser.
The "peace officer" was the dog. The K9 was the hero of the story, and the paper didn't even give his name or publish his picture.
He's still working undercover.
; )
He's actually a police cat.
He's a master of disguise.
