We are experts in deer-proof gardening because they strip everything. Our only veggies are planted in a dog kennel. Sungold, German Johnson and Better Boy tomatoes along with cucumbers and hot banana peppers. I'm going to try cherry tomatoes and sweet banana peppers outside the kennel this year.

*****************

We have at least two herds of deer that visit our yard, so we must choose our plants carefully. We found that they will eagerly consume hostas, rhododendrons, japanese maples, and rose of sharon. Fortunately, all have survived so far.

This year we planted sweet 100 tomatoes, lemon boy and brandywine. The deer haven't shown any interest in our vegetable garden, so far, at least. We also have broccoli, cucumbers, sage, rosemary, chives and dill.

They make the best hot pepper vinegar.

Any special recipe, or just put them up in vinegar?

I have a fairly simple hot pepper vinegar recipe - it's simple in that it can be put together in minutes - but it needs to sit for 2 weeks. The flavor will depend on how hot your peppers are. a little bit goes a long way and I like it for salsas, some soups (black bean particularly), salads and even in stir-fry.

4-6 fresh hot peppers of your choice.
8-10 sprigs of fresh chive (optional)
1-2 cups of vinegar.

Rinse and dry the peppers and chives (if use) and place in a sterile glass jar, add vinegar to cover and seal tightly. Keep in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks, shaking at least once a day. Strain it and transfer to another sterilized glass container and seal tightly. It's best if used within 2 months.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. We have put up bread and butter pickles and dill pickles but never tried peppers.

I've never tried pickling hot peppers - but I do plan on doing that this year. I freeze some of my hot peppers, dry others, make jelly out of others and vinegar out of still others.

I'm hoping to actually make some money out of them this year........along with the rest of my gardening endeavors.

Oh, the past two years I have planted NOTHING. I hope to have a veggie garden when Evie is old enough to dig in the dirt with me, but for now my day is consumed with her and activities!

I was carrying Jax in one of those papoose thingies working in the garden and she wasn't even a month old!!!!

That probably has a lot to do with why she loves the gardening - for short periods of time when it comes to the planting. When it comes to picking stuff, I've got to corral her. I planted lots of beans this year -once they come on they have to be picked constantly.

I can't believe I'm still up - I've got to say good night and hit the sack!
