FREEER FAMILY TABLE - Gardening Part I
me | June 3, 2005 | Gabz

Posted on 06/03/2005 5:47:47 AM PDT by Gabz

Good Morning all...........I had originally planned to start today with a topic of camping andother outdoor activities, but it is raining to beat the band and the weather was a bucket of water on my plans :)

So, since my outdoor activites for the day have been drowed, I'm back to my drawing pad and am going to try and finish the planning of the rest of my garden.

What kind of gardening do you all do? Do you like structured landscaping with beds and plans or are yu willy-nilly? Trees and shrubs, or just flowers? Or are you like me - whatever flowers are there I basically ignore and just work on veggies and herbs?

What kind of gardening do you all do?

The kind where I sit back with a glass of iced tea and watch the Mexicans work. ;)

The kind of gardening I like is when you either have enough money to pay someone to do it, and you go out and admire it from time to time, or you have children who can do it, and you go out and admire it from time to time.

I despise gardening, always have -- if there's more to it than buying something, digging a hole, planting it, and then forgetting about it except to look at on occasion.

Thjat sounds like a plan!!!!!

Unfortunately I've got to do it myself - the commercial growers around here pay the Mexicans and Guatamalans way more than I could afford to pay :)

I like productive gardenning - I see no sense in spending a bunch of money and time on stuff that goes into the grund and then after a couple of months needs to be pulled up and all it is good for is looking at.

I don't mind the veggies because they are productive and at the end of the season I actually have something to show for it.

Gabz, I enjoy plants and flowers that are pretty low-maintenance. I have lantana and blue plumbago (shrubs that are drought tolerant and require little to no maintenance). They are hearty and impossible to kill.

I have Gardenia, which are lovely in bloom and smell heavenly and a bed of annuals in all colors that require water often.

Now, I have a bed of roses and, of course, they do require care. They are so beautiful, however, that they're worth the effort.

My tree choices are crepe myrtles in back and Oak and bradford pear in front.

Cheer up. The sun will come out tomorrow!

Don't do much gardening. We have a 2 acre wooded lot. I have been told that we have a small fortune in really tall pine trees. They are nice, thick trunks, straight and about 60 feet tall. Unfortunately, that means that we barely grow grass (my hubby mows once a month whether it needs it or not.) I plant begonias every year along the side of the house and garage. I need a good plant or tree that will grow in my planting area. It must be able to do well in shade and wet soil. I think a dogwood would do well. Any suggestions?

Yes, I admire that aspect of gardening.

From a comfortable distance.

I'm thinking of moving to the desert. We've had six inches of rain this week!

That would make a great song title!!!!! LOL

Other than the veggies, I also want low maintenance plants. This place had a bunch of shrubs around the front when we bought it and other than occassional trimming they are totally no-maintenance and most have some type of flowers. The only one I am sure what it is is a forsythia.

About 3 years ago I started flowering gardening. We cut out part of our patio, but decortive fencing around it and now it is our patio garden. Hope pictures are OK:)>

This year in front of our house, I've been planting some trees, a dogwood, a Japanese Red Maple, and 2 Rose of Sharon'

Poll Question: How many of you that enjoy gardening were raised either in an apartment or small urban/suburban lot?

The reason I asked that is a lot of people I have talked to are like me, in that there family always had a very large garden when they were growing up and now do not care for any type of lawn/garden work except for the least we can get by with. That being said, it seems that the people that are always working in their gardens had the apartment/urban/suburban childhood.

We are doing tomato and hot pepper plants this year. I have about 100 plants ready to go in the garden but it has been rainy and cool here too. Also, our tiller has been out of commission but I think we have it fixed and ready to go. We are rooting for a nice day on Sunday to get the garden going!

Pine logging is big business in this area. We enjoy the pine woods on the property behind us - without any of the hassles of dealing with it!!!!

I'm not the best one to ask regarding trees/shrubs.......I don't even know the name of half of what is growing around the house :)

But I do know that we do have one dogwood, which gets a fair amount of sun most of the day, but is in an area that geenrally retains water.

You sound like my husband - he is looking forward to sitting on the upstairs deck this summer with a cold beverage watching me tend to my "plantation"
