Chamber cancels motorcycle rally
By Virgil Cochran, Lamar Daily News
The Lamar Chamber of Commerce board of directors yesterday voted to cancel the annual Thunder on the Plains motorcycle rally, which had been set for mid June.
The action came after the Lamar City Council rejected a request for operation of a beer garden in Willow Creek Park which would have been operated by the Lamar Eagles Lodge.
Chamber directors said yesterday, the event has really not grown in size and attendance, and discussed looking into some other kind of event for the same time slot in the future.
In other business, the chamber set final plans for this year's Lamar Days celebration, which begins today. The chamber will be focusing on selling chances for a 50-inch big screen plasma TV, valued at several thousand dollars. A drawing will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, and profits from the venture will go to chamber facility and retail trades committee projects.
The chamber also agreed to help sponsor an event being organized by Dr. Sam Downing, a retired local OB-GYN physician. Downing plans to host an informational program at the Lamar High School Auditorium in July on the topic of Menopause. Those who attend will be able to get the latest information on what is a very much misunderstood health issue. The program will be free of charge to participants.
The Chamber will assist again this year with the Lamar Recreation Department's annual Bike to Work Day. The event will be held at the Lamar Community Building on the morning of June 22, said Rick Dulac of the Lamar Recreation Department who is also a member of the chamber board. Chamber directors and volunteers will be on hand to help prepare a free breakfast for participants as part of the event.
In other upcoming promotions, the chamber discussed selling hot dogs in conjunction with a Be Happy Night promotion July 22, and in participating in a Wild West cookoff in conjunction with the Sand and Sage Fair.
The chamber may be looking into revising hours of operation for the annual Home and Garden Show, held each April in the Lamar Community Building. The chamber circulated questionnaires to participants, and Chamber Manager Chana Reed said the most common comment was in regard to hours of operation.
Chamber Director Kim Stegman reported that a group has already been booked to provide entertainment for the annual Farm City Banquet in November. This year's entertainment will be provided by a Utah group called "Kid Fiddlin." The group features fiddle players ranging from two to 16 years of age and is a very popular group she said.
In an economic development report, Bob DeLancey reported that PCDI has hired a new director, Lisa DeLancey, who is scheduled to begin duties June 1.
Reed reported that the Chamber is working with officials of the Colorado Tourism office to increase presence of Lamar and Southeast Colorado in a statewide tourism magazine. Reed said the chamber recently met with Scott Campbell of the CTO and efforts will concentrate on promotion of the area's heritage, Camp Amache, and wildlife viewing and bird watching opportunities.

Boo on the Lamar Chamber of Commerce!
Hang 'em High ~ Bump!
It's in the middle of nowhere.
Wow,, what an ignorant bunch of backwoods social engineering lamebrain jerks.
Kill the bike rally and promote a 'Menopause Lecture' at the local HIGH SCHOOL. Yeah, that'll draw crowds of high $$ spenders, educate our youth, protect and inform our seniors and show that nasty Eagles Lodge they can't sell beer around here and get away with it.
Can anyone NOT figure out why their bike rally must have really really SUCKED?
It got some idiot elected Senator, after all.
*yawwwwwn* Woo hoo. Sign me up.
Methinks "Lamar" is pronounced "LAME-ar".
If they held a mini-skirt on roller skates to work day it might be worth a look. :-)
Ah ha ~ that's the real agenda: Bird Watching!
As for straightaways Harleys and metric cruisers work the best on straight roads. ;);)
Just rename the town to something like, say, Hogsheaven, add a saloon or twenty and then advertise with lots of scantily-clad women in leather on main street. Might help.
How 'bout the Harleys show up at the big bird-watching party? VRRRRROOOOOMMMM.
It's their town. If they don't want a bike rally, more power to them. I have to ride from New Hampshire to Washington, DC on Thursday.
If you aren't from the Northeast, you may not know that we have had 15 days of rain in a row and the forecast is a washout for the foreseeable future. It may actually get over 50 degrees on Thursday.
Without doing any research on how large a motorcycle event is typically held in Lamar, Colorado...the article doesn't sound like it is really "slamming" us motorcyclists. Sounds like they just opted to cancel the event and put something else in the timeslot.
