Word For The Day, Thursday, September 16, 2004

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

obviate \OB-vee-ayt\, verb:
obviates, obviating, obviated; transitive verb
obviation, obviator; noun

1. To prevent by interception
2. To anticipate and dispose of or make unnecessary

It is reasonable to assume that Martin acquired the most basic skills of the rural gentleman: horse-riding, elementary sword-play and the minor degree of literacy that compulsory attendance at divine service encouraged were all requirements that preceded -- even obviated -- the need for a more formal education. --James McDermott, Martin Frobisher: Elizabethan Privateer

Etymology: Latin obviare, "to meet or encounter," from ob viam, "placed or coming in the way" (ob, "in front of"; via, "way").

Obviate?

Well, after looking at Ted Kennedy's wasteline, it's obviate!

Lettuce see how this works here.

LE is commando.

LE's clothes blow away.

CG suddenly is on the way home from work.

Call Dan Rather! We have something to uncover here!

It can't be coincidence..........

Excellent, Truthie!

Did you hear Ms. Heinz say this morning everyone could go naked after Red Cross volunteers requested clothing.

Let them eat cake . . .

Many are saying that Alan Keyes' outspoken positions obviate his run for Senator from Illinois. If a man can not state his believes what has happened to American politics? If the democrats can hide the fact that Obama was raised as a Muslim in Jakarta, Indonesia, perhaps he can be the senator from Illinois.

this is from the just released update on Ivan - not sure what it means for you guys.......

At 10 am CDT...1500z...the center of Hurricane Ivan was located near latitude 32.0 north...longitude 87.5 west or about 65 miles west-southwest of Montgomery Alabama.

Ivan is moving toward the north near 14 mph. A gradual turn toward the northeast and a decrease in forward speed are expected during the next 24 hours. This motion should bring the center across central Alabama today and into northeastern Alabama tonight.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 75 mph...with higher gusts. Additional weakening is forecast during the next 24 hours... and Ivan will likely weaken to a tropical storm this afternoon.
