On August 20, 1940, Prime Minister Winston Churchill told the British parliament: "Never was so much owed by so many to so few."

Paleoconservative Pat Buchanan wrote this as a book title: "Churchill, Hitler and The Unnecessary War: How Britain Lost Its Empire and the West Lost the World"

Science fiction writer H P lovecraft was born on August 20, 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island. He never lived to see World War Two. He believed: "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown."

Only God is omniscient.

But we have to use God's gifts to us to figure the difficult things out .........

WWII was set up by WWI.

WWI was the truly "unnecessary war".

President Woodrow Wilson completely botched the war and the peace process, just as he botched the U.S. economy.

Wilson was one of the worst presidents, ever. He was devout Progressive, who thought he knew everything, but had no experience outside of academia and politics.

Right. That conflict came about due to a combination or arrogance and blunder.

On the other hand, Hitler was absolutely determined to have his war, to the point that he manufactured a border crisis to get things started.

It really bothers me that Buchanan cannot see this. Hitler was not just another Kaiser Wilhelm type of guy, Pat.

Wilson thought he knew everything ........

Where’s Dick Nixon telling Khrushchev what he told him at the kitchen cabinet? (Nixon’s finest VP moment?)

What presidents had this disease before Wilson?

True. Another thing people get wrong is to claim the "Authorities" or the "Powers that be" or the "People in Charge" wanted the war. Simply not true.

The big pushers for the war were the young men on all sides.

For many young men, war is a way to get fame, fortune, and women (if you do not get killed or maimed). Almost no one foresaw the absolute meatgrinder WWI would become.

Think of all the young Chinamen who aren’t getting laid. One child only.

The WW1 leaders wanted to save face. Can’t be seen as backing down, even an inch. And the generals wanted glory and promotions.

But, yeah. You’re right about the young men. Thousands of them cheered in their town squares when war was declared. And no worries! It will all be over by Christmas, right?

Side point: Today’s young people seem to have wised up, at least a little bit. But our leaders and generals have not. The act just the same as the fools of 1914 did.

That’s a good one. I have the Commemorative Edition of Necronomicon.

I’m a big fan of it. Big fan of SciFi in general.
Dune and 1984 are tops on my list.
RAH, PKD, Clarke, Vonnegut, etc.

The award for fantasy literature is named after Lovecraft.

The 1977 Lovecraft Award winner was Dr. Russell Kirk, the author of The Conservative Mind. He won for his ghost stories (apparently, Piety Hill, his estate in Mecosta, is haunted.)

If you haven't read any of them, I recommend them.

There is a really badly written novel called Philip Dru, Administrator that lays out the "progressive" vision.

“WWI was the truly “unnecessary war”.”

WW1 was setup by the Franco Prussian War, which was a result of the Napoleonic Wars, which was a result of the Wars of Empire between Spain, Britain and France, which grew out of the 30 year and 100 year wars in the Middle ages. This doesn’t even count the Ottoman invasions and driving the barbarian Muslims out of Spain.

The issue was that other than the Napoleonic Wars there was always a settlement rather than a winner. The era from 1945 to present is the longest time that I can think of that Europe hasn’t been at war. Maybe since the Roman Empire.
