On Thursday, May 12, off-duty police Sgt. Lawrence Clarke, 55 years old, had his property damaged, livestock killed, and his grandson threatened by an aggressive black bear that had become habituated to people. When the bear proved to be resistant and unafraid of people, he was forced to shoot the bear to protect lives and property.
AmmoLand has obtained a copy of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection report of the investigation of the incident.
On Friday, May 6, 2022, the Newtown police department received multiple nuisance wildlife concerning a black bear matching the description of a known problem bear. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) was called for assistance. The bear was said to be easily identifiable because of ear tags.
On Tuesday, May 10th, at about 0830, Clarke, a Sgt. in the Ridgefield Police Department, noticed one of his chickens on his back deck. He went to the front of the house and saw his chicken coop had been tipped over. He found he was missing three chickens. Within an hour, he saw a large black bear near the coop. He yelled and ran at the bear to chase it off. For the next four hours, the bear circled the south side of his property. While Clarke was repairing his chicken coop, the bear appeared about 15 feet away. Clarke retrieved a starter pistol and fired twice to scare off the bear. The bear was not deterred until he began yelling and walking toward it.

A “starter” pistol would not have been my first weapon of choice. LOL!
Agreed! A finisher rifle is better, right from the start.
I think our state Senate is even more Marxist than the House, so the probability this legislation will become law is very high.
Our federal appeals go the Marxist 9th Circuit, so it will take a Supreme Court decision to over turn this.
Guess that means he couldn’t arrest the bear.
It’s a fiction to avoid jail time in the stupid jurisdiction he lives in.
I guarantee the starter pistol was pulled out of a drawer next to his old referee outfit 15 minutes after he talked with his lawyer.
The bear description matched those of a known problem bear.
(There’s a good joke somewhere in there)
Having had to chase many bears away from my residence over the last 40 years.
Some bears are gone at the sound of gun fire others take a more positive response before they leave.
But then I live in a area that bears are hunted hard for close to 6 weeks.
For another couple of months the a chased buy hounds.
Most tend to be respectful of dogs and gun fire.
“Ain’t nobody need no AR-15!”
I wouldn’t exactly call .223 a Bear load, but I guess this proves the adage that it’s all about shot placement.
If only the bear had gone to public school he could have been a non-binary schoolyard bully, and everything would have been fine./s
They all look the same to me unless they're carrying a picnic basket or wearing Nikes...
Any idea who he's talking about, Boo Boo?
“...it’s all about shot placement.”
And the 500 rounds you have in your high-capacity clip.
The bear was a sow, about 208 lbs.
Her nickname was Bobbi.
There had been over 100 sightings of Bobbi over a 5 year span.
You mean the bear didn’t yel. Out “Paws up, don’t shoot” as it charged the man?
Surprised he didn’t get arrested for “failure to call animal Control so that they could trap the bear and transport it to a new home” where it could terrorize new people-
The left think that all folks have to do is call authorities anytime they are threatened. When seconds count, cops are many minutes away!
The racist bear jokes write themselves, actually.
Since I hit aluf mishne (like a bird col, but three black leaves), I’ve been forced to sit on review board of shootings of “civilians” by soldiers.
Without fail, the reports read like this article. “I did all things to stop the bad guy from being bad without hurting anyone. Then to save my life and the lives of (young child, mom, whatever) I shot the guy.”
Good for them. Just like in the USA, We are rot through with liberal douchebags like the lawyer in the article who says there is no right to kill a bear in self defense.
The cop shot the bear because the bear had arms.
“Weapons of war” have no place in our forests.
Did it say how many rounds were used to drop it? Just curious...
