My favorite movie is Groundhog Day, and I have made it a personal tradition to watch it on... Groundhog Day, much to my wife's chagrin.

This post is in honor of that tradition:

It’s Groundhog Day 2023 and here are 17 of the best quotes from the iconic 1993 movie to celebrate the holiday.

Occurring every year on February 2, Groundhog Day is a popular North American superstition that revolves around an animal called a groundhog.

If the rodent emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow due to sunny weather, it will retreat back to its den and winter will continue for six more weeks.

Yes, and it was Bill Murray in his comedy best, a’la Ghostbusters and Stripes, but perhaps it’s because I don’t have a proclivity for Rom-Coms, I found the part where he kept trying to win over Ande Mcdowell over and over and cover a bit tedious.

Ten years ago, I had Stephen Tobolowski on my radio/podcast show. He joyfully shared how much fun he had in creating “Ned”. He said Murray was a bit stand-offish and said to Harold “Show me what you guys are gonna do, before we roll on this.” Stephen had it down and jumped right into character, badgering the hell out of the delighted Murray.

The way Bill Murray so casually takes the bag of money out of the Brinks truck while the drivers are occupied with the young woman is one of the best parts of the movie.

It really was a clever movie that stands up to repeated viewings.

Another Bill Murray favorite is "What About Bob?"

General Beauregard Lee did NOT see his shadow in cloudy GA this AM, so Spring is upon us in the South, I suppose. And, indeed, the WSB weather app shows temps in the 60s next week.

It would have been more amusing if he indulged himself more in the idea that whatever he said or did with her, it wouldn't matter the next day after the reset.

The whole movie is about the man having to improve and prove himself worthy of the woman. You don't see many movies where the woman sees herself as having to improve to be worthy of a man.

I think a lot of movies from the time period had that sort of theme, or something similar. I once read that the formula for most of Tom Cruise's movies was a character arc of a flawed and sometimes unlikable guy who had to come to a reckoning and as a result become a sympathetic character.

Speaking of quotes, I liked this one:

"What would you do if you were stuck in one place... and every day was exactly the same, and nothing that you did mattered?"

"That sums it up for me."

Because most guys will simply move on and not wait for the woman to improve.

Love the part where he says “Ned!”, and then gives him a right hook.
