SHOT Show: FBI NICS Update

At SHOT Show University, the FBI provided an update on the Nation Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). What they shared was staggering and sure to make the anti-gunners throw up their hands in frustration.

For those unfamiliar with NICS, it is a system used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to conduct background checks on individuals who want to purchase firearms from a licensed firearms dealer in the United States.

The NICS system was created in response to the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993, which required background checks for all firearms sales made through licensed dealers. The NICS check is done by a firearms dealer when a customer wants to purchase a firearm. The dealer will contact the FBI or a state point of contact through a toll-free telephone number or an online system and provide the customer’s information. The FBI or the state point of contact will then check the provided information against records in the NICS database and inform the dealer whether the sale can proceed or not. If the check is delayed for more than three business days, the dealer can proceed with the sale but is required to keep records of the transaction.

While many of these numbers were released previously, it’s helpful to look at the growth in background checks and firearms purchases over the past 20 years. For example, in 2020 and 2021, the FBI conducted almost 39 million NICS background checks each year. The most checks were conducted in 2020, with over 39.7 million, a record high, which the FBI attributed to pandemic buying, but we all remember the social unrest during the Summer of Love – a more likely explanation for the record number of firearms purchases.

Wil the FBI update the NICS to include the files of petty thefts and major crimes of the MIILIONS of illegal aliens pouring in ?

A USA born and raised 40 year old will have an FBI record from when he stole a six pack of beer on a dare when he was 18 and have a hard time finding a job, but a newly arriving Gangster from El Salvador who committed multiple murders will have a nice clean record

Silly. They don’t apply our laws to them since they’re not citizens. 🤔😁

The author should have mentioned the enormous increase and recent decrease (in Illinois) of NICS checks for purposes other than firearm sales. Non firearm-sales are now more than half of all NICS checks.

How did the country ever survive the 217 years prior to 1993 without the filthy background checks?

I want all background checks and paperwork gone. 1986 machine gun receiver law, gone.
Gun control act of 1934 erased.
1968 machine gun amnesty, deleted.

I wanna go to Walmart and buy an M134 mini gun and an AT4 out of a vending machine and drive home in my fully operational Abrams, park next to my ICBM silo, and try out my new rocket launcher. No questions asked.

Anything else is infringement.

There is a reason the Federal Government has the Constitution and the Bill of Rights behind glass in a museum, they consider it to be a relic of the past which has no bearing what they have done since at least the turn of the last century.

Non firearm-sales are now more than half of all NICS checks.

I knew that NICS background checks are done on people who want to own a firearm or explosive. (see https://www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/more-fbi-services-and-information/nics)

You mean that more than half are for explosives, or are there other categories?

More than half are done for carry permits and carry permit rechecks.

For a while the number was about 60%, with Illinois and Kentucky responsible for about 75% of those.

Those two state would run their entire permit list every month, rain or shine.

Over half a million permit checks and rechecks, just from those two states, every month.
