I flew home to England from New York for Her Majesty the Queen’s funeral on Saturday. It was a snap decision, but after missing her historic Platinum Jubilee only months ago, I decided that I couldn’t possibly miss the funeral of the only Queen I’ve ever known.

I arrived in London Gatwick and first made my way to Brighton before later planning to journey to London. I had an appointment at the Palace of Westminster to see the Queen lying in state in Westminster Hall that afternoon.

Watching the funeral this morning....so many details about this event.

The Royal Navy actually pulling the coffin has a very interesting story behind why that it is done..... And the coffin wreath has pieces of her wedding bouquet in it.

Amenjoying witnessing this Historical event.

She was exceptionally unexceptional. None of the hidden vices so many in power suffer from. A blessedly normal human being. Now prepare for the deluge from whiney King Charlie...

They are in no way welfare recipients. In fact the monies they generate is five times any they receive.

I don’t get the obsession with the Royals, and many British are either hostile or ambivalent about them. That said, the travel from people like the author will help the British economy. And with the US strong dollar, it’s a good time to visit and spend some money.

Adulation of the Queen is fundamentally un-American. She represented the European system of royalty where certain members of society enjoy inherited legal privileges, political power, and social position.

This system is what the signers of the Declaration of Independence were rejecting by the assertion that “all men are created equal”.

I too have little regard for royalty. But another Freeper (I forget who) recently made an interesting point.

The British monarch has great power that he/she dare not use. However, the mere existence of that power keeps British politicians in check. And anything that keeps politicians check is a good thing.

That’s what the other Freeper said. And it sure made sense to me.

I saw them driving her coffin to Windsor. I was surprised that they would drive through the streets like that giving any terrorist or Obama supporter the opportunity to attack it. I saw the public throwing flowers at the hearse which easily could have been a bomb. Well it’s good to see England doesn’t bow down to these terrorists and shows more respect towards the public

My grandmother went back to England for the coronation in 1952 against her doctor’s advise. She saw the coronation and died there. She’s buried in Doncaster.

I read he demands toothpaste be put on his toothbrush. If that is true, good God, I feel sorry for England. Can you imagine? A grown man must have the toothpaste put on his brush like he’s a 2 year old. Do they have to wipe his butt as well?

Exactly what many members of our government are, only they don’t have the grandeur and pageantry of the royal family, which I rather like.

She had a very carefully crafted public image. We simply don’t know.

Our country is not suited to monarchy and we rightly rejected it as then constituted. The British developed a form of constitutional monarchy that works for them. (It brings lots of tourism $ to their rainy island, too.)
