Most people...including Biden and whatever creatures are behind him...have no idea what this about and don’t even understand the issue of those two regions.
Russia and Ukraine are family, and as such have family feuds. However, their languages and ethnic composition are slightly different, and Ukraine has a number of Catholics in addition to its own autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church that is not under the Moscow Patriarchate.
Putin is a pan-Slavist nationalist. I’m sure in its dreams, Russia would like to control all of the area, but this current situation really relates to two heavily Russian- populated areas that had been requesting Russia for protection (whether rightly or wrongly).
Biden felt confident about taunting Russia because he knows the Russians had no interest in a war but that this was something he could exploit because he thinks it makes him look tough and reinforces the narrative that Trump was a tool of the Russians and then Biden came along and kicked out them Russians. BTW, when I say “Biden,” I mean whoever or whatever is behind him, because while he’s always been a nasty leftist, he’s barely capable of thinking what he’s going to eat for breakfast and surely doesn’t remember it.
Russia’s big enemy is China (no overt hostilities at the moment, but they are rivals, particularly since we’re out of the game), so maybe Biden Inc. is also signaling support for China against Russia.
This is a staged play. Scheduled to kick off just as Xi’s Olympics close, to placate multiple populaces. There’s a reason Joe Biden and his team were so confident as to what would happen when.
Putin just gave a gigantic speech saying the Soviets created Ukraine and that Ukraine is not a real country, that it exists only because it was carved out by Lenin. He has previously called the collapse of the Soviet Union, resulting in the liberation of these same states, one of the worst geopolitical disasters ever.
People say that the West before WW2 should have listened to all the stuff Hitler was saying, otherwise they wouldn't have kept hoping for peace and would have understood his true aims.
Well, we have Putin making clear what he wants to do: reconstitute the USSR. Why don't we believe him?
Tomorrow (Sunday, 22 Feb) is the closing ceremony for the Beijing Olympics.

True. Everybody has that crazy Russian uncle that starves millions of Ukrainians and replaces them with forced in Russian citizens.
He pretty much laid it out in a fiery speech today. Ukraine was a country created by the Soviet Union, and Ukraine is rejecting its shared past with Russia, enabling American ambitions of weakening Russia by aspiring to membership in the NATO alliance.

I'm not really all too impressed by how the Russians do things by brute force-this is not really a finesse move into Ukraine.
But you have to laugh at how Putin has adopted the doublespeak, and deliberately misleading rhetoric of the left. Peacekeeping! Indeed!
LOL, you would never say that Russia and Poland are family, although they are both Slavs. But Russians have a saying, "Kurica nye ptitsa, Polsha nye zagranitsa?", "A chicken is not a bird, Poland is not abroad?" Basically suggesting Russia still considers Poland to be subject to their rule, at least this is what most Poles still consider to be true about how Russians feel. And I suspect more and more the Polish government will be the ones leading the charge in defense of Ukrainian independence.
