Ukraine was always a problem as an independent country. The people in the east of it and Crimea are ethnically Russian, speak Russian and want to be part of Russia. The people in the west of Ukraine are ethnic Ukrainians who speak that language and have a much closer affinity with the Poles.
In taking the Russian regions, Putin has created a smaller but now united country that will be anti Russian rather than neutral.
Not America’s problem.

So now Donbas partisans will fight to resist Ukrainian government troops, and call on Russia for assistance, and Russia will come to the aid of their Russian brothers being oppressed in Ukraine. Sort of like Germany and the Sudetenland.
