Microsoft will release Windows 11 on October 5th

Microsoft is announcing that Windows 11 will be released on October 5th. The new operating system will be available as a free upgrade for eligible Windows 10 PCs, or on new hardware that ships with Windows 11 pre-loaded.

The free upgrade to Windows 11 will start rolling out on October 5th, but like many Windows upgrades in the past, it will be available in phases. New eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first, and then Windows 11 will become available for more in-market devices in the weeks and months following October 5th.

“Following the tremendous learnings from Windows 10, we want to make sure we’re providing you with the best possible experience,” explains Aaron Woodman, general manager of Windows marketing at Microsoft. “We expect all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022.”

On existing Windows 10 PCs, Windows Update will let people know when the upgrade is available for Windows 11. You can also check to see if your device is eligible for the Windows 11 upgrade through Windows Update, or Microsoft’s dedicated PC Health Check app (currently in preview).

I have 2 desktops running Win-7 Pro x64, just fine and dandy. I’ll stay with them, thankyouverymuch.

“close the programs that are preventing the computer from shutting down but never states what those programs are”

Win10 tells me what programs are blocking shutdown. What bugs me is when you can’t delete a file because some program is using it but they don’t say which one. One of the biggest jobs of an OS is to keep track of who is using what resources. I sometimes close all open programs and it is still being used by some service or something. Drives me crazy.

Get up, walk away, have a smoke and when you get back, it’ll be closed. Mine are usually gadgets running on the L/S of the screen: CPU Usage, Rolex Watch, Calendar, Weather. Only happens once-in-a-while.

Just curious, why can’t you use the Mac version of Office 365? For most cases it works like the windows version.

“why can’t you use the Mac version of Office 365? For most cases it works like the windows version.”

I know I looked at it, but I don’t remember why I didn’t get it. My Mac is about 4 yr old, and I don’t expect it to last much longer. It overheats easily and it has a lot of nuisance problems. I doubt I will ever get another. I don’t think its performance is worth the significantly higher cost of an Apple.

Another consideration is I have an iPhone. I believe you can synch a Windows product with an Apple product but I’m not sure about that.

Thanks for asking. Your post caused me to think more about it.

I read that windows 11 won’t run on a 7th Gen Intel processor. As if that were really old. What a laugh. And what a scam.

From what I have read, Win11 has more cosmetic changes than operational changes.

I'm just going to come out and say it: Windows 11's UI is a complete shitshow. Part ChromeOS, part Gnome UI, part Win7 UI, part Win10 UI and the mix and match of rounded and squared corners throughout just makes it look like a jumbled up mess.

The lack of consistency in the UI should be a deal-breaker for everyone.

I deleted the VM I installed it on. I'll keep the Win10 VM that I need for MS Office/work related stuff. Windows 11 can take a flying leap.

Get ready for the Windows “Blue Screen of Death” to appear.

At work I have to reboot Outlook 365 at least twice a day because it hangs. I would say that at least once a week every app in Office dumps on me; Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc. If Office apps are not dumping then
they are locked if MS 365 passwords. I work in IT for a fortune 500 company and their rollout of MS 365 has been excruciating.

Microsoft is now only turning out craptastic software. My next personal PC I plan to go with Linux because then I will no be getting paid to put up with that dumpster fire of an operating system.

This will show where the files have gone to:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/files-save-to-onedrive-by-default-in-windows-10-33da0077-770c-4bda-b61e-8c8e8ca70ac7

In the lower right corner of your screen where the clock is look for the blue cloud icon.
Click on it and then click on Open folder button.
This will show where the files are on your computer.

Click on the View online button and it will show where on their server your files are backed up to.

Once you have your files where you want then UNINSTALL Onedrive !!

I did after I noticed work files being listed in my Word program as recent files. I did not want my work and personal files to mingle or have the company know what I was doing at home as Office let’s your company spy on the files.

Windows 10 11 Update... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Thanks to PROCON for the ping!

Maybe they’ll re-package and re-name XP as Windows 11. Y’know ... the best Windows version. (Besides, I want the XP Sound Recorder back!)

I read that windows 11 won’t run on a 7th Gen Intel processor.

Perhaps a blessing in disguise?

For over 25 years I have been testing/evaluating/experimenting with newer operating systems. This is the first time my gear failed to meet the minimum hardware standards for update. And that includes a hotrod business-class Dell Latitude.

So it looks like a parting of the ways for me and Microsquish.

I had to buy a new computer two years ago and I did what I could with little money and it was the worst choice I have ever made. I ended up with the slowest computer, Dell Inspiron 14 3000 series. I cannot believe how frickin slow it is. All I do is read, email, shop online.

Glad yours is fast. Mine is worse than a turtle!!

Doubt I’ll ever use it. When MS screwed up Windows 7, pre-Win10 rollout, I switched to Linux Mint.

I want a Windows operating system so I can use Microsoft Office.

What on earth for? There are several products that are perfectly good for office functions, and you don't need to support far-left organizations like MS
