Never, EVER, allow an operating system require account and/or registry management on the cloud. The price for convenient is a complete loss of privacy and control over *YOUR* files. The minute MS requires an account or cloud-base setup to run a Windows machine is the last time I use a Windows-base PC online.

Bit of an exaggeration but I’ll go there anyway - Hey MS - No one cares!

“The lost files represent years and years of work. Some of it is on an external drive, but most of it is not.”

That’s horrible. I’m sorry for you. I lost one-and-half years of my daily log on my MacBook when I upgraded Numbers, apple’s spreadsheet app. That really ticked me off.

Coincidentally, I was shopping for a Windows laptop earlier today. I want a Windows operating system so I can use Microsoft Office. I have a Windows desktop which I rarely use any more because I use my MacBook.

If anyone has a brand of laptop they like, please feel free to recommend. Right now, I’m leaning toward getting an ASUS.

I bought a Lenovo Thinkbook. (yes it’s the ChiCom descendent of IBM).
After 10 years of Dell hardware problems, this baby is absolutely perfect.

Thank you. I will have a look at it.

My experience with Dell desktops has been been great overall, but I haven’t had one for a long time. I had all kinds of problems with Gateway. I don’t think they’re going concern anymore.

This just reminds me to do my update of my Linux Mint Cinnamon.

I have a 10year old Sony 17 inch screen laptop with BluRay. I paid a premium price but it has been the best computer I ever had. A workhorse. I even drove over it with the car. It is not compatible with Windows 11 per their specs. I’m not dumping my computer for Bill.

I have a couple of W7 discs around here and may revert back if 11 is foisted on me.

Either that or go all Linux and suffer a while to get equivalent stuff to work or fork out and go (shudder) Mac.

I had an Apple laptop once I got used at a good price, had it for a month. Sold it for a little more than paid. I never got Mac love.

I stuck with Dell for years because it was a US company, although all the hardware is sourced from China. But based on my personal experience and reviews, I switched. So far the Lenovo has been flawless.

My {sniffle} Win7 desktop {sniffle} bit the dust a couple of weeks ago. I decided to go with a Win10 replacement.

So far, the replacement (Win10) has been okay, but not great. I lost use of my flatbed scanner and Xerox color laser printer — no updates of drivers. [Had that happen in the move from XP to 7, a decade ago.]

I also have a Linux Mint laptop I use more and more.

From what I have read, Win11 has more cosmetic changes than operational changes.

[I still hate the ribbon menu bars in programs. Hate! Hate! Hate! them.]

I have been playing around with Virtual Box in hopes that I can get the scanner and printer working through them.
