Effective at ranges out to 2,000 meters, the SIG Sauer MG 338 machine gun has a greater range than the M240 platoon-level machine gun. It has a rate of fire of 600 pounds and is chambered in the hard-hitting .338 Norma Magnum (8.6x63mm) round, and yet it weighs in at just around 21 pounds.
It is easy to see why a year ago the U.S. Special Operation Command (UUSOCOM) selected the MG 338 for evaluation to bridge the gap between the M240, chambered in 7.62×51 NATO, and the Browning M2 heavy .50 caliber machine gun. The MG 338 could help provide nearly the range and even stopping power of the M2 with a platform that could still be mobile.

“It has a rate of fire of 600 pounds”
Huh?
That’s all the Army needs, another cartridge to complicate logistics. I rather doubt anyone would see a target suitable for a MG at 2000 yards.
Hmmm... Think it is more like a 600-lb &12-oz firing rate...
That’s one heavy trigger pull.
Guaranteed to make Nancy Pelosi wet between the legs. She can’t wait for the NG to open up on the peoples.
Sorry, I don’t think it will be possible to explain this to you.
Give it a try.
Isn’t there a 6th grader available?
Can we get a price check on a semi-auto version?
(asking for a friend cuz he can’t afford the ammo for full auto use....)
No, you’ll do.
8.xx X 63mm as opposed to the old school 7.62 x 63mm (the old 30-06)
I don’t see the need, but then - I’m not part of the M-I complex anymore.
The MG’s range was 2000 meters or 6561.67 feet.
I can’t think of any weapon offhand that fires such a round ( .338 ). 50 cal has other uses than just in a MG.
So, somewhere in size between a 10" and 12" naval gun.
It’s lighter than an M240 and can be converted to 7.62 NATO. the Army is out to replace the M240. MG 338 is a candidate. An unavoidable issue with the .338 Norma Magnum ammo is that troops can’t carry or stow as much.
Spell Check strikes again!!!
Probably 600 rounds per min
Seems lightweight for such a big gun. Ammo separate weight issue.
Get some down to DC so they can target practice on American citizens. White ones of course.
Actually a lot of snipers have been using the .338 Lapua. The .338 Norma is very, very similar, but a bit better suited to MG use. I suspect the snipers will just convert to the .338 Norma and the military will standardize on that round.
