Neither is going to happen.
Joe Biden’s gun-control plans have about zero chance of getting through Congress, especially if Republicans win at least one of the Georgia runoffs. That’s good, because his bright idea for restricting “assault weapons” would force America’s gun owners to choose between (a) giving up millions of their firearms and magazines to a federal “buyback” and (b) registering those guns with the federal government, paying billions of dollars in taxes for the privilege.
Any guesses as to how that would play out in this country?
As many readers may be old enough to remember, America had a ban on assault weapons for ten years, from 1994 to 2004, and it didn’t start a civil war. That’s because the folks who drafted that law were smarter than whoever is handling gun policy for Biden. The law applied mainly to businesses: It became illegal to sell brand-new semiautomatic guns with certain combinations of tactical features (think folding stocks, flash suppressors, etc.), as well as new magazines that held more than ten rounds at a time. Individual Americans who’d previously purchased the banned items were left alone, and they were even allowed to sell the items on the secondary market.
This isn’t to defend the law. I don’t think it reduced crime, in large part because rifles are not often used in crime to begin with, and also because “assault weapons,” despite some military-style features, do not differ from semiautomatic hunting rifles in their caliber or rate of fire. And I do think the ban violated the Second Amendment, for the reasons David French ably laid out in 2018.

But the undeniable fact is that American gun owners are not going to register their weapons, and they’re not going to surrender them, either. The only real questions are the extent to which the defiance would be quiet versus brazen, and how severely Democrats would pay the price at the ballot box. The anti-gun Left should stop pretending this could play out any other way.

Gum owners will NOT be out billions.
It won’t cost me a gdamn dime. I simply won’t comply.
F U J B!
Agree
They will be creative and relentless in this. If they pass laws that get the low hanging fruit, that is, gun owners who are unwilling to violate any law, and aren’t defenders of 2A, that is a start.
Then there is ammo. Try to buy some now. And that is the approach Obama took.
Based on a brief discussion at Thanksgiving, there will be no compliance by anyone we know.
I disagree, gum owners will just find something else to chew.
Many states could/would just ignore enforcing it, just as many are doing on the Federal Marijuana prohibitions/laws.
Without enforcement at the local level, the Feds can’t control it.
“If”
King Leonidas
1. It won’t pass
2. No one would comply
If they want to jackboot their way into this, we’ll just have to KTF.
Democrats would pay the price at the ballot box.
NOT look at this election their plan to disarm the public is still in the works.
As Hitler did
That’s ok, it’s more important to sit out the Georgia Senate Elections to SEND THE GOP A MESSAGE!!!
At least according to some here.
[[[Gum owners will NOT be out billions.]]]
That’s pronounced, “gub”.
stay off the range
I’d rather be a bad shot with ammo, then good with none. Eddie01 11/27/2020
You don’t have to stay off the range - just stay above a minimum stockpile.
Yep. Our house, too. I only HAD one registered gun, and that was lost in a tragic boating accident along with all my ammo and precious metals!
I’m STILL grieving that loss! ;)
Seriously? WTF do they think they’re going to do? Tear up the floorboards in our homes?
This stuff is a FANTASY of Leftists, LOL!
If, and if...
The idea is not so much to collect money. It isn’t so much to confiscate firearms, though that is high on the list of desires. The primary idea is to make ordinary citizens subject to arrest at any time. The fact that they own firearms is the excuse to arrest them. But the desire is to disenfranchise them, take away their vote, and to keep them locked up or make them pay their way out of prison.
And, yes, lots of people pay their way out of prison. Famous people can agree to do public service ads. Rich, connected people, like sex perverts, can get sweetheart deals. Most likely there was money or blackmail in the Jeffry Epstein deal where he did house arrest (but didn’t even have to stay at home.)
I can’t count the number of times I have heard liberals express their desire to reeducate, or imprison, or kill conservatives. Biden’s gun plan is the necessary foundation to all of those things.
The Obama administration was criticizing Gadsden County Florida for having no white people in their prisons. (Gadsden is about 80% black.) So, Gadsden traded a few prisoners to Leon County so they could have a few whites. I knew one of the prisoners traded. All the whites were in hospital care within 24 hours. So, if you run the prison system you can turn a six month sentence into a death sentence by pressing a few computer keys. I think that is where this leads.
