To be very clear, the first two you mentioned are not self defense, they are sports. Krav Maga is good, similar to what I taught in the infantry. Even then, you are far better off with a good 1911. Hand to hand is the absolute last resort after everything else has failed.

Very true! One can a basic level of skill with a handgun from a 3-day class. Karate, or any martial art for that matter, takes years and that is only with good instruction and some serious commitment on the individual's part. And screw the BJJ nonsense, as in the majority cases, these perps are not alone, and they like to stomp on people's heads so don't go to ground and give them an easy target.

Learning to defend yourself is a very good idea. Go observe a class first at any potential school. If any potential martial arts training is not using pressure testing on techniques where the other person actively resists, go somewhere else. Most schools do not teach you how to fight and practice techniques against willing opponents who offer no resistance.
After participating in martial arts and combat sports for 50 years and counting, I would say that an average boxer who trains 6 months and spars could beat most black belts in traditional schools. Go to an mma gym or boxing gym. Self defense is more than learning a few techniques. It is learning techniques that work, work against resisting opponents, and having the confidence and will to use them.
But person shooting a black person assaulting them in self defense would be found of murder 1 and hate crime because the black person would claim that used a racial slur. See how it works.
Black man that slugged 90 year old woman the other day probably will claim she said the n word when he passed her.
Maybe all white people need to have go pro’s on their heads for protection.
