People sometimes ask if I have tried to convince black leaders to take a different view on racial issues. Of course not. I wouldn't spend my time trying to persuade the mafia to give up crime. Why should I spend time trying to convince race hustlers to give up victimhood?

A higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It was Republicans whose Philadelphia Plan in the 1970s sought to break the construction unions' racial barriers that kept blacks out of skilled trades.

Achievement is not what liberalism is about. Victimhood and dependency are. Many things that would advance blacks would not advance the liberal agenda. That is why the time is long overdue for the two to come to a parting of the ways.

Equality of rights does not mean equality of results. I can have all the equal treatment in the world on a golf course and I will not finish within shouting distance of Tiger Woods.

If you have always believed that everyone should play by the same rules and be judged by the same standards, that would have gotten you labeled a radical 60 years ago, a liberal 30 years ago and a racist today.

I cannot understand people who say that minorities should be represented everywhere and yet are upset when there are blacks represented in the conservative movement.

Black votes matter to many politicians more so than black lives. That is why such politicians must try to keep black voters fearful, angry and resentful. Racial harmony would be a political disaster for such politicians.
btw - he'll be 90 years old on June 30th.
What a treasure he is.
Bump to the top!
That guy is the bomb!
Ping.
Black Lives Matter is one thing - even that is a cynical criticism of society, insinuating that society does not value black lives. But BLM propagandists reject the slogan All Lives Matter, so it is more like White Lives Dont Matter. But even that doesnt plumb the depths of the cynicism of the slogan - because the BLM propagandists dont care about the numerous black lives lost to black crime, so some black lives dont matter either.
So the bottom line of the BLM propagandists is actually that the only lives which matter are the lives of black criminals.
What could suit BLM sloganeers better, therefore, than to "Defund the Police?
It's entirely possible that Chauvin hated Floyd -- not because he was black, but because he hates criminals or had a personal vendetta against Floyd.
But these points only make sense if you believe reason and common sense should guide public policy, not feeeelwings.
Good to see these comments from Thomas Sowell.
We all remember how Sowell was among the Gang of 22 Never Trumpers who hated Trump with a passion.
I wonder. Has he ever changed his opinion of Trump? Curious.
My freshman Econ textbook was by Sowell.
Thomas Sowell is so full of wisdom.
Excellent.
My sons fiancé told mentioned that she was struggling with Econ, so I simply gave the book to her, having only read one chapter myself. The chapter about why travel in sub-Saharan Africa is so difficult - and the implications of that for Africa's development.
Equality of rights does not mean equality of results.
Words of wisdom can’t be spun media kicks dogs again.
People need to stop judging everyone by how they might not like something Trump does. How do you get that he hates him? And isnt that a bit slavish and one-noted to base everything on how they relate to Trump?
I would never give up on Sowell; he has proven far too great on conservative principles.
Even though he supports Yankee part of the Civil War, I still love him. But pro-confederate Walt Williams has my heart even more. ;-)
Im getting ready to re-read Black Rednecks and White Liberals. While I was searching Amazon for his book on Marxism, I found one called The Einstein Syndrome that he wrote because his son was a late talker. My grandson is a tiny bit behind in talking but hes a smart kid he follows directions and can point to letters of the alphabet correctly when you ask him. Anyway, Sowell is a fascinating man and a national treasure.
OK, I take that back. I have no basis to believe that Sowell “hates” Trump, so that stretch of mine was not fair.
I read parts of Sowell’s economics book years back. But I think Trump has rewritten the rules on how to successfully deal with foreign trade problems, especially stopping the export of jobs to other nations and protecting domestic manufacturing of steel and other key economic infrastructure.
What we learned from Trump is that too much foreign deficits hollows out our manufacturing and is net destroyer of the country. And the Trump doctrine challenges the hard line laissez-faire economics that Sowell taught.
I did a quick search and could not find a story where Sowell praised Trump for anything. But then again, a Google search on Trump matters doesn’t often come up with praise.
Like you, I do like Walter Williams very much.
Thank you!
“The tweet included a video shared by libertarian radio host Larry Elder that showed economist Thomas Sowell talking about the economy under the Trump administration, which specifically targeted Krugman’s past predictions.
“The economy is booming in a way that no one had predicted,” Sowell said in the clip. “People like Paul Krugman were saying that when Trump gets in, the economy is going to tank. No, the economy hit new highs.” (video was apparently from 2018)
Thanks for finding this, nuconvert. Good to read.
