When I accepted an administrative position at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, friends warned me that I would not fit in as a conservative. I dismissed their concerns as hyperbole, an instance of believing universities are more politicized than they actually are.
After eight long months, however, I had to admit that they were right. The political atmosphere in the college bureaucracy does not tolerate political disagreement and is overwhelmingly left-leaning.
Administrators keep large universities running and help students access the extra services for which they pay. University staff handle finances, work in human resources, or, in my case, serve as program administrators. Most of my job was focused on marketing events and making sure vendors get paid. I would do the small behind-the-scenes work that keeps a program running.
Though those basic duties are non-political, the office environment can be anything but.
That point was brought home to me when, one day, my supervisor walked into my office and said, “I just can’t stand you anymore. You don’t fit in here and you don’t even seem to realize it.” I was dumbfounded.
She expressed concern with my general demeanor and my desire to take classes—which is an employee benefit at all UNC system campuses. Nor was it the first time she admonished me for enrolling in classes, advising that it would be “better for the department” and those I worked with if I waited until I had more experience in my job to take classes.
She refused to cite any specific issues with my job performance, even after three meetings between herself and my program director.

I had 2 or 3 of these, and one was a stupid dike who hated my guts bec. I did not have an obama sticker on my car. I simply told her to STFU and just give me my release papers so I can call my lawyer. There’s no use being nice because I wont get a reference from them anyway. That’s why I learned to never bring anything personal to my desk when they lay you off because they mostly have security escort you out as an example to others. The dumb tw*t forgot that I kept records of every communication from performance reports etc.
Could have told you that 38 years ago when I taught as an adjunct professor and found out the hard way.
I’m betting the university business is going to go out of business before I die. Or at least change from the economic monster it has become to what technology is capable of streamlining. Most students here at NAU are taking their classes online for the rest of the school year, save the labs that are required for some.
It will be a big hit to university cities like mine, but it’s long overdue.
Almost exactly what I was told recently. These liberal leftists are making the workplace so bad that something has to happen to cause THEM to face consequences. Have asked for help finding jobs on Free Republic for years with NOTHING happening.
A huge number of people in the workforce who are liberal basically DEMAND that you go with them on ideology and wicked living or they totally reject you AND try to make sure you can't work anywhere in the area. Wonder why my posts are so harsh? Get a clue, folks.

You are SPOT on.
The way to deal with this is to file a grievance. This puts them on the defensive and you on the record with HR. If they try to anything to you from that point forward it looks like retaliation unless they have a paper trail.
Good post. Yes, today’s SJWs aren’t just liberals. They are neo-fascists who are in no mood to compromise. Unlike the liberals of old, SJWs simply will not consider other points of view. It’s absolutely their way or the highway.
Is there any hope for them? I don’t see it. But maybe it’s some combination of:
- A liberal is a conservative who hasn’t yet been mugged.
and
- With age comes wisdom.
I guess the real question is why would anyone want to be within 5 miles of Crapple Hill, let alone live/work there.
My wife worked in the real world for nearly 15 years before taking a job in academia. Fortunately her boss was in the same boat, coming from the real world as a VP of finance and my wife a Controller. They were shocked at the waste, narrow minded. and political politics which permeated the university where they were employed. I had worked at a community college for 15 years and she asked after a week how do you get things done with the secrecy and politics of the idiots in charge, is it that way at your college? Yes I replied and you talk to people, watch what you say and you’ll figure out what’s going on and how to make their stupidity work to your advantage.
Fortunately my wife’s boss had a real world benefactor on the university board of directors and he realized some sanity had to be exercised in finances and he covered the VP and she in turn protected my wife. Unfortunately the VP’s father passed and she moved to run his business, the board member begin getting up in yrs and was les and less involved. The new VP had been in academia her entire life and she was closed minded and an economic idiot and after my wife got an outstanding annual review in the spring her last year she was summarily dismissed without cause two months later by this new VP. She went back to the real world for five years and is now back in a college job, I warned her they Marxist are getting louder and bolder watch your 6.
