We were always at the mercy of the cheerleader types who inflicted these things upon us.

My junior prom theme was The Wizard Of Oz and I got roped into helping with the “art” for the thing.

100 feet of “dark forest” was part of it and every day I went home covered in black chalk.

My senior prom was, for reasons I never understood, “Come Sail Away”.

I don’t think the pompom squad ever actually listened to the lyrics.

Ugh.

The only upside to that prom was that I’d just read Interview With The Vampire and rather than the usual 70’s pastel and ruffled shrt, my tall, lanky boyfriend wore a black tux with tails and I skipped the popular Little House On The Prairie look and wore a blood red floor length swoopy dress.

We freaked everybody out.

It is interesting when the lemmings hear the chorus but pay no attention to the lyrics. My favorite example is Springsteen’s “Born In The U.S.A.” which is an anti-American (or more correctly anti-American-war) song but was used constantly in rallies as a pro-American song.

I believe the Mencken is right. Democracy allows people to vote for what they think they can get out of a situation for themselves, not caring that it costs others, the results of which are not sustainable, so it turns sour. Thus their selfishness turns into the well deserved loss of the liberties they vote themselves out of.
