If you look at the circled area, these are EXTERNAL damage. This is indicative of anti-aircraft missiles. The missiles explode just before they impact the plane. Shrapnel results from the explosion, which impacts the plane.
This looks similar to the hull of the plane downed in the Ukraine/Russia conflict (Malaysian Air Flight 17).
Possibliities:
1. It truly was just an accident with very suspicious timing.
2. One overly nervous Iranian anti-aircraft commander got nervous and shot by mistake.
3. The strategic move is to take out citizens of a U.S. ally (many Canadians on board). Deny doing it. Dare the U.S. to respond knowing the U.S. media will say Trump has no absolute proof and is driving us into war. It also was a Ukraianian airline and if Trump responds he'd be siding with Ukraine over Iran/Russia.
Any experts on possible missle damage to aircraft?

Shot down by accident in a highly charged military situation. No conspiracies or hits on people.
The UK Daily Mail has pictures of punctured wings with holes that look like bullet holes or something that might have exploded near the plane.
Numerous occasions where an engine on a 737, etc has caught fire, even exploded. Plane never lost control, landed safely. Video shows the plane in flames as it crashes. Not indicative of an engine failure. The fact that the Iranian government won’t let anyone else look at the plane supports an ‘oops’ by the Iranians.
I’m leaning towards ‘2’ at this point.

Not randomly like that; the wing would have been shredded plus the action was quick and violent according to the video of the plane taking off.
The nationalities of those dead, according to Ukraine Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko, were as follows: 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, and 11 Ukrainians — nine of which were crew members — 10 Swedes, four Afghan, three German and three British.

Tens of thousands of planes fly every single day without a mishap for years. And then, this happens at a particular location at a particular time something else quite significant is happening there.
Only a fool would seriously entertain the idea that this is simply an amazing coincidence.
The plane didn’t crash itself.

One of the images at the link shows what appears to be shrapnel damage to the wing.
