“Second part, NO, don’t EVER assume that medical care from any of the ‘named’ institutions is good.”

Amen!

When I was diagnosed the doctor at Johns Hopkins told me there had been only about 125 known cases at that time.

I couldn’t take lipitor in the 90’s, extreme muscle pain, but have been on lovastatin for 20 years with no other effects than a perfect lipid panel every year.

The alternative of not using it may be worse.

Need to look at the whole picture.

There are other cholesterol lowering drugs too, which are different.

E. g. crestor.

“Fringe” is one of my all time favorite series...and I’m not a SciFi fan.

You can watch the entire series on Amazon Video - free on their IMDB “channel” with limited commercials.

A brother of mine, after surgery that put a balloon in a cardiac artery, was put on statins and told he’d have to take them the rest of his life.

He took them for about a month, then put them away, changed his diet and kept checking his blood cholesterol periodically - never took the statins again. His cholesterol has been fine - going on 30+ years now - and not another heart incident either.

However, his diet change was most likely not what put his blood choleserol in control, because eating too much high cholesterol foods alone rarely is the cause of high blood cholesterol. Most of the cholesterol in the blood was made by the body, not drawn from choleserol that was consumed.

What most likely helped my brother was the life style changes he made that accompanied his dietary changes.

As the article below explains.

“Ways to lower high blood cholesterol - “If you have high cholesterol, you can often lower it through simple lifestyle changes.”

I think some medicines are meant for people with no self discipline, which is most people; and I am not judging anyone.

I will admit though obtaining self discipline gets harder with age, and a lot of sympathy is required as the years get on.

I'm happy to explain if you wish.

No,thanks...no need to do that. I had a 30 year career at several of the world's most famous hospitals so I know my way around. You *are* correct to suggest that no hospital...no matter how famous...is staffed by perfect people. But to suggest that there's essentially no difference between a regional hospital in Illinois and New York Presbyterian is foolish as well as irresponsible.

I'm happy to explain it further if you wish.

Funny, my wife was just the opposite. Couldn’t take Mevacor for anything, but did fine with Lipitor (and simvastatin). I guess the moral is that there is no good or bad product for everyone; got to sample and see. Although pravastatin has the best chance to be tolerated due to its water solubility.

My neurologist took me off Pravastatin the first day he saw me. It really messed with my muscles to the point I looked like a drunk sailor who hit every bar. HIS words, not mine.Within weeks I was back to walking normally. Still use a cane for the odd moment, though over time it will also be no longer needed. I convinced my beloved to drop his use of Pravastatin and within weeks he was walking much better. It just depends on the person.

Tried statins once some time ago. Quit when it became difficult to chew and muscles hurt in jaw and elsewhere.
