Government sponsorship of violence against opponents or complacency in the face of incitement to violence is a powerful tool of political repression. Regimes such as Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, Nicaragua, China, and other tyrannies have used such tactics to great effect. When mobs attack anti-government demonstrators, for example, the police either disappear or stand by watching. In American cities run by Democrats and on the U.S. college and university campuses, the authorities increasingly have been standing by as radicals do the dirty work of beating up or silencing conservatives.
In societies riven by mutual hate, the people who control the police and public communications make all the difference. When they maintain impartiality, as did Germany’s Weimar government while the Nazis and Communists struggled for primacy, partisan warfare tends to be resolved politically—though the results are harsh. When societal hatred or the partiality of authorities results in deaths, long-smoldering cold civil war can blaze into holocaust.
We Americans are now facing the danger of a civil war thus ignited. We do not think of civil war this way because our Civil War from 1861 to 1865 was less a conflict within society than it was a highly organized war between states. That war notwithstanding, personal friendships and mutual esteem persisted on both sides, such as that between Ulysses S. Grant and prominent Confederate General James Longstreet.

We can't count on people or governments being smart, but the nuts and terrorists may be so extreme that most people aren't tempted to sympathize with them. If only a small sliver of the population sympathizes there can be trouble and chaos, but not a full-fledged civil war.
Mutual respect in Civil War I? In a sense, yes, the officers had been educated together, and the troops on both sides did have things in common. But I wouldn't exclude some mutual respect as a possibility if a new civil war were to break out. If both sides fight like hell, they'll find some respect for each other as fighters. There would be brutality and savagery, but we saw that in Civil War I as well.
People do a good enough job hating each other on their own.
If elites want uncontested power, they find an external enemy for people to focus on.
Creating internal divides in the country stirs up resentment toward elites, and that threatens their power.
I have ancestors who were brothers and on opposite sides.
That sounds about right. America will be destroyed from within as predicted. The old and weak will be the most vulnerable. Looking at how many of the young have this harsh attitude these days; I can see them being quite cold and cruel to others without feeling any remorse at all. It’s like they are already dead inside.
The cities will be the easiest to conquer. Pushing the conservatives out will be a good thing for the conservatives. After that just shut off their supply of water, power, food, and gas. They will surrender within a month as they start killing each other for the fewer and fewer supplies left. It may only take a week.
The grand experiment of making America a melting pot has turned it into a pressure cooker. It isn’t just racial now though; it’s mostly ideological. Race just feeds the ideology.
The roving mobs of young gangsters types will be the most destructive. Think Mad Max scenario. Even if they are repelled today; they will come back with more and more people until they get what they want or die trying. Single family units won’t stand a chance against them. Only by uniting into groups can they be fought off.
I expect your numbers are a bit low though. I can’t see this ending without at least 100 million dead; maybe 200M. Mexico and Canada will get sucked into it too with half their populations decimated as well.

One item often overlooked: human waste disposal. A small family produces a lot of human waste. which, if left unhandled will kill you. Gotta have a plan for that.

You would think more folks would just try voting if they thought things were that bad. It was a very different time but I think I recall that eligible voter turnout was supposedly around 80% or so before the civil war. I don’t think we have cracked 65% in 100+ years.
I’m not sure civil wars can spark off when the poorest are the most likely to be obese.

Pro-Life vs Pro-Choice maps and Illegal Alien Sanctuary States/Cities as well and they fall along similar lines. There's quite a few States that don't show up on these maps. Missouri is on a Pro-Life map but that's it. Southeastern States don't show. These would be States that have a more conservative legislature that simply doesn't pass laws for every damn thing imaginable.
Want to stop a war here quick? Shut off the power. It would quickly be survival of the fittest and the snowflakes depending on fast food would perish quickly.
Almost all such articles say we are in dire straits and it's impossible to find our way back. Mr. Codevilla correctly lays this at the feet of the Democrat ruling class that created identity politics, nurtured the Balkanized groups to replace their lost Southern constituency, and made conservatives the open object of their hatred. These are scary times.

Some Freepers have a fantasy of how great CWII will be.
It will destroy most of us, our children, grand kids and those not even conceived yet, unless it is over in a week or less.
Destruction of our communication systems, roads, railroads and shipment of food and other things we need daily will make us worse than any third world $hithole country in weeks.
If it drags on for a couple of years, basically every fertile woman will have her life cut short due to lack of food, water and stability in her home. My Dad’s Mother and her Sisters, who were born during CCWI or right after it, were lucky to make it past their mid 20’s before dying young.
Also, our enemies will take advantage of the opportunity to kill survivors of both sides.
Our borders on both Oceans and on land, North and South will cease to exist. Countless foreign and armed marauders will invade, attack, rape and kill any American Survivors. The lucky ones will be those are killed quickly.
I think you are 180 degrees off. The Democrat elite started this 60 year slide with the creation of identity politics and by creating a hugely varied coalition of groups with one goal...hatred of conservatives and wiping out the traditional USA. That has now morphed into open hatred and resentment of white people.
All of this was created by Democrat elites and continues to be pushed and encouraged by Democrat elites. The rabid leftist coalition fully supports their insane elites and they have consistent goals. Why should they turn on their elites?

Numerous fliers that say “death camps for Trump supporters now!!!” have been posted on street posts and parking meters in Patchogue, New York.
The fliers feature the threatening text in red and a stylized image of Trump’s face as a skeleton
