I admire your optimism. I do not share it.
Luckily we have the States. And I think some States will rise to the occassion and maintain order. But, it's really hard to say and it could become a war of all-against-all, as you suggest.

Because Leftists are basically insane and self-destructive. They must have nearby targets to destroy first. When they run short of "right-wingers", they turn on each other.
The so-called elites are riding the tiger. In their arrogance, they raise up monsters which they cannot put down.
Plus, it depends on what you mean by "elites." In a divided country one bunch of politicians defeats another bunch of politicians to win power, but nobody has the unquestioned authority that Establishment figures had 60 or so years ago. Everybody is suspicious and everybody in power is suspect.
And if the Democratic Party becomes too closely identified with a powerful elite hostile to the public, people vote against them. That's what happened with Hillary Clinton. She was seen as too elitist and voters dropped her.

We were perilously close to electing her. Only Trump’s brilliant campaign strategy targeting at-play states under Electoral College rules and her laziness and health issues avoid her winning. 2020 is going to be very interesting to see if leftists are energized enough to win (or steal) more votes than in 2016.
A lot depends on what the military does in a CWII. If our strategic forces remain intact, especially the SSBN force and remains on station no foreign power should intervene militarily for risk of annihilation.
I do think we end up breaking up with the coasts and north east going with the communists and unless a truce is worked out quickly they will be decimated by starvation. Their gangs will head to the red states and most will be slaughtered quickly and not tolerated.
The mid-west, mountain and southern states stay together and state governments continue to operate and seize former US military installations. That being said there will be violence in all states as conservatives in red states will simply not tolerate further abuse and it will come down to brother against brother in some cases. Initially in all states it will be bloody and our children will see it and be casualties in it.
I can’t help but wonder back to watching the tv series in the 1980’s North and South where George Hazard and Orry Main are standing on a depot platform, Fort Sumter has been fired on and they are questioning each other, is there somewhere where we could have stopped this before it got to this point...

I think what you mean is city vs the state and the state will win. Texas can put down an rebellious cities at will for example.
No other nation(s) posses the naval or air transport to invade N.A. None.

Norks invade the South Koreans.
China goes after Taiwan and smashes Hong Kong resistance.
Chine eyeballs Japan because we’re not there anymore for WW2 revenge.
And etc.
In a scenario involving a general break down of the Federal Govt the states will step into the power vacuum, mark my worlds. The red state citizens will not find relief from Federal tyranny in DC. As I see it the blue states will remain loyal simply because of the number of their citizens that are radical leftists.
Again let me be clear, the citizens that want to stay free will soon learn that that relief from tyranny can/will never be found petitioning Washington DC. This would only beget MORE tyranny. As a result they will demand relief at their state houses and from their governors who will act autonomously. This is the ultimate relief valve that was SET UP BY OUR FOUNDERS AND AT THE HEART OF THE REPUBLIC.
Why would I care about any of those conflicts?
