Banning Plastic Straws – Just Another Climate Scam Strawman
DB Daily Update ^ | David Blackmon

Today’s Campaign Update, Part II (Because The Campaign Never Ends)

You don’t sayyyy… – The people who run McDonald’s were forced to admit yesterday that the company “may have exaggerated how eco-friendly their paper straws are.” Oh.

It seems the giant hamburger-with-fake-onions maker has spent the last year claiming that its paper straws are “100% recyclable” when in fact they are not recyclable at all, as in “0% recyclable.” These vaunted “solutions” to the issue of plastic waste polluting the oceans turn out to be just another piece of garbage, and not any real “solution” at all.

Now, I have nothing at all against paper straws – I’m old enough to remember that, way back in the 1960s, they were the only form of straws we had available to us in my little Texas hometown and we managed to drink our Dairy Queen Dr. Peppers with them just fine. But this mania growing across the United States of America to shame companies like McDonald’s into using them instead of plastic straws and further to push states to go so far as to issue outright bans on plastic straws is just one more fake crusade by a bunch of fake eco-crusaders.

Here’s the truth about the problem with plastic in our oceans: The United States and Europe COMBINED produce about 2% of the total waste, with the U.S. producing about half of that, or 1%. Meanwhile, fully 82% of the waste emanates from Asia and its rapidly-expanding economies, with the remaining 16% coming from Africa, South America and the rest of the world.

World map showing where plastic in ocean comes from

In other words, the plastics issue is just like the carbon emissions issue: The United States could eliminate ALL use of plastics and not even make a small dent in terms of solving the problem. In other words, the entire issue is – excuse the pun – a classic straw man.

The folks at McDonald’s got caught up in the virtue-signaling fever that is sweeping the Western World on this issue, got caught exaggerating their virtue, and embarrassed their company as a result. So goes another day in Climate Scam world.

That is all.

Several companies have rushed to offer alternatives to the disposable straw ban. One company began selling washable stainless steel straws. A woman died when she fell and he straw pierced her eye and went into her brain.
Banning plastic straws is the stupidest idea yet.

Why use straws when God gave you two good lips! Why not use reeds? The Ancient Egyptians invented straws (to drink beer) using reeds.

I foresee a time when enterprising entrepreneurs build huge floating platforms supporting factories. They will scavenge the plastic from the ocean as a readily available energy source to power their equipment.

It will drive the environMentalists nutz!

My idea was to put a metal straw holder on iphone covers, like a stylus for the old palm pilots. The straw would be telescoping so it can retract back into its holder. Basically a Swiss Army Phone Cover.

I’m down at the Sandals in Ocho Rios right now and they use paper straws down here. They are a fairly thick item and I would guess about 1/3 of a tree was used to produce each one.

Just one more thing they did to soften the public, and make it more sheepish than it already is, and ready to accept whatever the government forces it to do.

A compliant sheepzenship lets government become even more totalitarian.

You can hardly drink from modern paper cups because they collapse in your hand with out a snap on lid on them.

It's a little eerie how quickly straws vanished from pretty much every restaurant.

Now I see the same thing happening with plastic grocery bags. People are being asked to bring their own canvas bags to the supermarket with them or purchase paper bags. Right now I'm purchasing the paper bags but I'm on the lookout for some "Trump 2020" re-usable canvas bags. If I'm going to be forced into this claptrap, at least I'll have a little fun with it and send a message.

Paper straws sound like a reasonable fix, but they’re NOT.

The first couple sips are fine, but now the straw is absorbing the liquid, and you’re now sipping your drink with a straw that’s breaking down, leaving the drink with a powdery taste.

I now pack a plastic straw with me when I eat out.

Fact!

Stainless steel straws can chip teeth very easily.
