When I was a kid I always flew into a rage when I received what I considered to be really horrible birthday gifts such as a shirt or socks. Therefore I was curious as to the reaction of my niece, Genesis the Mermaid, to getting really crummy gifts for her tenth birthday.
At least you got gifts...................
And you didn't? Is there something you want to tell us?
To put it succinctly, I was poor..........
I went a couple of years without as well. When you’re poor... You’re poor. Things got better when I got older though.

I was so poor, I couldnt even pay attention .
Good soul in that kid. Let’s try not to break it, huh?

I was so dumb, I couldn’t even divide attention
When my brother was 10 years old, our paternal grandmother, who was in declining health (and who grew up absolutely dirt poor), gave him frilly, polka-dot girls blouse for his birthday.
I still remember the look of terror on his face when he opened the box.
He and I both looked at our mom, who gave us a quick scowl as in: “do NOT say anything. We will discuss this later....”
When I was 13 (1964) I got a brooch for my birthday present. My parents were divorcing and it was all my mother could afford evidently. I still have it...never wore it. Kids today get too much STUFF..they’ll probably never even remember the gifts.
"He looks like a deranged Easter Bunny."

You should have got a crack on the ass and nothing next year.
With you there. Never got a birthday gift until I got married. Mom always made a cake for birthdays but we never got presents. I was oldest of 7 and my folks were poor. Was not a big deal to us.
My grandfather would give me a check for my birthday...but would never sign it (more than likely from dementia). I never asked him to sign them either.
This little girl seemed sweet...I wouldn’t have done this to her. I had two little girls her age once too and never thought of this “joke”.
What a good kid she is.
My GD used to have HUGE birthday parties, like 100 people attending. (Small town, lots of family and friends) She got every Barbie, every Bratz every everything but her great grandmother gave her the most inappropriate gifts and she was always so gracious.
When she was 10 her little 8 year old friend, who LOVED her birthday parties, died, so she chose not to have her parties anymore.
This young girl was raised to be respectful and gracious, especially to grownups known to the family. She knew the camera was ‘rolling’ and you were waiting for a Mega-Meltdown. I don’t think she’s the Little Diva type, though.
If she knows you at all, she figures you might bring something a little bit wacky, that has a meaning to you and because you have a good sense of humor.
Wouldn’t it have been fun to have a camera in the light fixture to record what she said after you left.
I recall Gift Exchange in the third grade. I got a friend of mine a ball of string from Sears & Roebuck. He could use it for projects, so I thought. My parents thought it was a ridiculous gift, an awful gift that would embarrass the family at Church. This student’s family went to my Church.
I’m thinking “Was that wrong? Should I not have done that?” They made me buy something else from a store called Kresgee’s. I bought him a craft kit named Creepy Crawlers.
Perhaps but I'm sure she will always remember the GOOD TIMES we had the day before celebrating her birthday at the bowling alley with her little friends. BTW, I can't really remember the birthday presents I got as a kid but I'll still remember the FUN I had for my 11th birthday when my mother treated my school pals and I to several bowling games. Clark Nelson, Jesse, and Max Robbins...are you guys still out there somewhere? We sure had FUN bowling although our scores were lousy.
Actually, yes, Experiences and Emotions are what make the memories.
