>> Tom also won two medal of honors for bravery. Quite a guy.<<

Yes, Lt. Colonel Thomas W. Custer was an admirable soldier. His two MOH awards were for actions in the Civil War. His younger brother named Boston Custer was also killed at LBH.

Tom, unfortunately, had a drinking problem which concerned Libbie Custer who was very close to all the members of the Custer family.

Probably true, but he also could have won it without Jackson had he listened to his “Old War Horse”.

Had Jackson been in charge of his old corps, he would have taken Culp's Hill and Cemetary Hill, and the Confederates would have then dominated the position. He would have driven the men until they did it. Gettysburg was lost when Lee split Jackson's corps a month or so before the battle between Ewell and A.P. Hill - two generals who are textbook examples of the Peter Principle.

I have never criticized Grant. Nor Sherman. Both were very good at using the assets they possessed, assets that greatly outnumbered anything the Confederacy had.

Since the Confederacy did not have anything close to the assets enjoyed by the North, Lee had to fight a different kind of war, and his strategic improvisations were the result of that imbalance.

Lee was planning on reorganizing his army into three corps before Jackson died and would have followed through with his plans had Jackson lived. So we really don't know when Jackson would have arrived at Gettysburg or from which direction.

General Lee loved Gen. A P Hill. Lee's last words ( some controversy about this as he was hard to understand at the time )

The morning of October 12, he developed a “feeble, rapid pulse” and “shallow breathing.” Lee’s reported last words were, “Tell Hill he must come up! Strike the tent!” ”

'Hill' is A.P. Hill.

Makes sense. Little pocket space in an em jacket. Grant is often depicted as wearing a US enlisted blouse. That may be just another legend.

pretty much a myth. All of the photos of him in the field show him wearing a frock coat and dark blue trousers. Pretty much standard for senior officer in the Union Army.

The famous one in the Wilderness with Grant leaning on a tree shows that ensemble.
