Sir Winston Churchill: “Lee was the noblest American who had ever lived and one of the greatest commanders known to the annals of war.”

During a tour through the South in 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt told the aged Confederate veterans in Richmond, Virginia, “Here I greet you in the shadow of the statue of your commander, General Robert E. Lee. You and he left us memories which are part of the memories bequeathed to the entire nation by all the Americans who fought in the War Between the States.”

Saturday January 19, 2019, is the 212th birthday of Robert E. Lee.

Robert E. Lee, a man whose military tactics have been studied worldwide, was an American soldier, Educator, Christian gentlemen, husband and father.

Lee was a great general but not as good as the one who defeated him.

This is a strange picture by any account. See how many glaring errors you can pick out.

This is about the time there is SUPPOSED to be a Lee-Jackson Day memorial service in Baltimore. But then that wench took down their statue in town.

Great but no Washington.

House restores citizenship to Robert E. Lee, July 22, 1975

“As a soldier, Gen. Lee left his mark on military strategy,” Ford said. “As a man, he stood as the symbol of valor and of duty. As an educator, he appealed to reason and learning to achieve understanding and to build a stronger nation. The course he chose after the war became a symbol to all those who had marched with him in the bitter years towards Appomattox.”

IMO opinion Lee and Washington are interchangeable and both would have behaved exactly as the other in the given situation.

Jackson was a rock star in 1862. He was a strange bird.

Does this look like any representation of the parlor of the McLean house that you have ever seen. It looks like the ceremony is being staged at the War Department in DC.

As I recall, Custer was at the Maclean mansion that day too. I don’t know wbout Meade, and I can’t positively ID the others.

And Grant and Lee were seated across from each other across a much smaller table.

Actually much of the yankee AOP seemed to have a pretty high regard for their opponents and their opponents commander. Obviously there were plenty of jealous piss ants such as Henry Fonda brilliantly played as LTC Thursday in Ft Apache. We never do know why his character was such a colossal prick. Ford kept that a secret. Believe such people do exist in the services and some do get to wear stars. The AMC vice commander at the time of 9/11 surely was one.

I sincerely doubt that there was a picture of Lincoln in the McLean house where the surrender was signed.

I also doubt that Grant would have been in any sort of dress uniform like that. His normal uniform was a normal infantryman's jacket, pretty much unadorned ...

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Also Sheridan was present. He secured the table that Lee used to sign the terms of surrender for Custer for $100US. About $2000 by today's standard.

Greatest American general.

A great American general to be sure. Whether he is the greatest is open to opinion.

That’s quite an endorsement from Sir Churchill I would say.

I wholeheartedly agree.

You mean like the portrait of Lincoln in a Virginian's parlor? That kind of glaring error?
