We've been promised them for years, and periodically we get to see an interesting new supposed prototype appear in the media, or as a "character" on TV or in movies. But the real, consumer-friendly flying family car never seems to actually come to market. Why is that?
Well, it's a pretty tough nut to crack, and there are questions of what infrastructure would be required (if any) and of course there's also the question of whether or not we want to inflict a bunch of bad drivers onto the sky as well as the roads. I mean, if you think automated cars are a challenge, expand that to three dimensions!
Yet every couple of years we see reports of whatever new and exciting flying car is just about ready to, well, take off. But you never see flying car dealerships and if you look up into the sky, you don't see any Jetson-like cars flying.
It's a topic that's always been near and dear to my heart. Not only have I been a car and aviation buff for decades, I also flew light aircraft for a few years. And I would love dearly to review whatever flying car might finally make that leap skyward into the marketplace! Bring it on!
The first flying car I remember was on the old Bob Cummings TV show when I was a kid. That Taylor Aerocar was ugly and unwieldy, and for all I knew it could very well have been a death trap, but it was so cool! And you can apparently buy one if you have half a million dollars burning a hole in your pocket that couldn't be spent better on a small helicopter.
The next flying car I remember, other than the animated one in the Jetsons, was the flying...

Never I hope
Look at the commute on any decent sized city. Imagine them all flying. Imagine every accident a fatality
Not coming for a long long time.
Kamikaze Muslims would have a field day
Consumer-grade remote-controlled guided missiles.
What a great idea.
As soon as you invent people to pay attention while they drive and keep the phone out of their ears. Most people can’t drive in 2D. Imagine the mayhem in 3 D!
If it was ever seriously considered (and it wasn’t) then 911 killed off any chance of it.
Heck, we have problems right now with dime-store drones entering controlled and otherwise restricted airspace.
The Democrats can’t figure out the tax per mile yet....
I can only imagine the damage that could be done by asian female flyers.
Technology may solve some of the inherent problems with everyone having a flying car. But as others have already mentioned it is the human element more than the technology that is the hold up. Small drones that use little area to lift off and land and not take up too much room to park are possible.
Perhaps what is needed is something like the cell phone network that each vehicle is in fact controlled by the “system”. You get in, tell the drone where you want to go and it handles everything else. Actually as far as parking goes, there is no reason the drone could not be sent off to park elsewhere.
If flying cars are in our future, the one thing I think can be safely predict would that humans would not be in control.
I’m not to anxious to see an 85 year old lady in a flying car...........
uh, pass, all day long.
I bought a brand new airmobile
It was custom made
It was a Flight DeVille
With an outboard motor
And some hideaway wings
Push in on the button and you can hear her sing
Now you can't catch me
No, baby, you can't catch me
Cause if you get too close
You know I'm gone like a cool breeze

Why?
Since I am an 85 year old lady I’m curious.
.
It’s like cold fusion - 10 years away for how many decades now???
It’s called an airplane and you need a special license to drive/fly it. Could you imagine, with flying cars and other vehicles, not just the accidents there would be, all over the place, into trees homes and buildings, but the increase in crime due to gangs with flying cars. Can you imagine flying police cruisers, flying box ambulances, fire trucks, school buses, delivery vehicles, postal carriers, plus commuters flying all over the place trying to beat the sky traffic? Then there would be the Sunday sky-drivers out to do a bit of voyeurism, checking out backyards they could drive over. No flying cars ever. Keep the sky’s as clear and traffic free as possible.
Well the Cubs did win the world series so anything is possible I suppose.
