Surrounded by Coyotes while Hiking alone

Probably not the scenario to be in for a hiker, but what if you’re on a hike. And, you get this feeling that something is near you, not by another human but by a pack of howling coyotes.

When we hear coyotes howling its usually from a safe distance.
How would you handle a pack of coyotes howling closer to you?

Most of the time when I’m on a hike, I carry a pistol and depending on the state that allows me to carry my rifle. (AR)
In this video a hiker is unarmed on a hiking trail with coyotes nearby, how would you react?

Here’s the excerpt from Jessica Kirsh Youtube:
“This is raw, uncut footage I captured with my GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition on my very first solo sunset hike as an Arizona resident. All of the sudden on my way back down a trail on Lookout Mountain ? in Phoenix, I found myself surrounded by howling coyotes in every direction! ?

Now at this point, I had only lived in the desert for a little over a year. So this was my first experience hearing coyotes howl this intensely, where I wasn’t in the “safety” of my fenced in backyard.

Watch me try to be as stealth as possible getting back to my car parked at the trail head! See the full surrounded by coyote video here.

There used to be an elderly gent who let us deer hunt on his property. He made it very clear that if he ever discovered we had seen a coyote close enough to shoot without shooting it we would not be allowed to hunt there again. That was the deal - we could hunt there but we were obliged to take care of the varmints.

No so sure about that, a pack can take down a deer. They were watching to see if she was going to start running.

Maybe the Coyotes we have here in Northern Minnesota are wimps. Every time I see one it is running away as fast as possible. (Perhaps they are on to me) :)

Two fatal coyote attacks have been confirmed by experts:

On August 26, 1981, an urban coyote grabbed a three-year-old girl named Kelly Keen in the driveway of her mother and father’s home in Glendale, California and dragged her across the street. Her father rescued her by chasing the animal away and rushed her to Glendale Adventist Medical Center, but she died in surgery due to blood loss and a broken neck because of the incident.[2][4]
On October 27, 2009, two eastern coyotes mauled a nineteen-year-old singer-songwriter named Taylor Mitchell at Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia. She was on a break from her concert tour when they stalked and chased her down on the Skyline Trail. An air ambulance airlifted Taylor to Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, but she died after midnight from severe injuries and blood loss that were sustained during the incident.[5]

I live in coyote country times 10 and have never heard of any attacking humans. Never. One case in Canada doesn’t add up to beans imho. That said they are a nuisance at best and should be shot on sight.

Apparently they do.
Here in TX we hunt them. In CA, probably not as much.

I had a pair approach aggressively (no vocalization) until I drew the pistol then they peeled off and into the brush. So I’m guessing that it depends on how hungry they are.

Not sure that the young lady was in fact in danger. They often howl around dusk around here.

Liberals want us unarmed, and they assure us coyotes, wolves, stray dogs, wild animals in general are not an issue. There was a real good reason why settlers in this country did their best to eliminate wolves. Coyotes can be dangerous, depending on the circumstances. Stray dogs can be a huge issue, especially if they are running in pairs or a pack. Wild animals can indeed be a threat but good luck getting liberals to agree.

Liberals also try to convince us dangerous criminals are just misunderstood, or from a different culture.

No need to arm ourselves, LE will protect us they say- even though there have been many court decisions that say LE has no obligation to protect us. Response time rarely allows for LE to protect us in the first place.

Our car broke down late at night out in Western Kansas once when I was about 12 or 13 years old. My uncle sent me ahead for help, and I’m sure coyotes stalked me the whole way. They weren’t yipping like that, though. It was pitch black and I couldn’t see a thing, but I could hear them rustling in the dry weeds alongside the road as I walked along. I figure if it had been anything else, it would’ve run away. But these things were following me. I had nothing to defend myself. Talk about being scared!

“...we were obliged to take care of the varmints.”

Pretty much the deal on where my son and I lease a place for deer hunting. We’ve seen a couple but never in range and we hear plenty just shortly after sundown. State law allows deer hunting until 30 minutes past local sundown and you can almost set your watch that the coyotes will start howling about 15 minutes after sundown. I use it as a marker for the time I need to pick up my stuff to head for the truck. I don’t like to shoot late due to the difficulty of locating a wounded deer at that time.

It is rare, but does happen. I hear it is happening more and more in CA of all places. Combination of people moving out of developed areas, more time spent hiking- and it is people that have no brains about wild animals.

The average coyote isn’t very big so rarely have people been killed by them. Many coyotes no longer have any fear of people and people are getting dumber so I do think it will likely increase.

Dogs in packs are far more dangerous than coyotes. They will attack livestock, pets, people without hesitation. No fear of people and pack mentality is dangerous. People will dump dogs in the country thinking someone will take them in, when a pack forms the dogs have to be shot or they will become dangerous and destructive.

Coyotes are very smart predators. Here in Oregon; yes I live behind enemy lines, a single coyote lures a dog to follow to the pack, then they attack and kill the dog. They also run through neighborhoods and kill cats. It’s wild! Literally.

Packs act different than individuals. And Northern Minnesota coyotes probably still see humans as predators. Californians probably try to be friends with coyotes.

Dangerous coyote encounters are usually in situations where people have been feeding coyotes, or people attempting to aid pets endangered by coyotes.
