See the Guts of a Browning A-5 Shotgun
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 12/6/2017 | J Hines

The Browning Automatic 5, most often Auto-5 or simply A-5, is a recoil-operated semi-automatic shotgun designed by John Browning.

It was the first successful semi-automatic shotgun design, and remained in production until 1998. The name of the shotgun designates that it is an autoloader with a capacity of five rounds, four in the magazine and one in the chamber.

The Remington Model 11 was the first semiautomatic shotgun produced in the United States. After the Remington 1100, the Browning A-5 became the second-best-selling auto-loading shotgun in U.S. history. Here’s an animation of the cycling operation of this awesome shotgun. This gives you a different perspective of how it all works on the inside. Go here to see the animation of Browning A5 shotgun here.

Boy, I wish I could get new shells to just magically appear in my magazine after every shot.

Notice how it continually loads and ejects shells without actually firing a single round.

A-5 is also known as the “Humpback.”

carried a 20 GA A-5 since I was 12; quail, dove, rabbits and squirrels and deer with slugs. Still my number 1 hunting shotgun. That is 50 years.

I have four A-5s.
Three are made in Belgium.
One made in Japan. I take the Japanese-made gun to the field...

I have a Remington 11 in 12 gauge, it looks identical to the A-5. Maybe Remington made them for Browning early on. Does anyone know?

also have my father’s 12 GA A-5. It and my 20 are of course Belgium made since made in the early 50s. They have been well used AND taken care of. Light weight, ventilated rib, 26 in. improved cylinder and gold trigger.

That’s a patented feature of this new shotgun known as SRA, self regenerating ammunition.

Remington licensed the design from Browning. FN had the European license, and Remington had the US license. Later, Savage also licensed the design. I have a Savage 745 which is almost identical to the Browning A5 except there is no magazine cutoff, the receiver is aluminum, and that thing kicks the bejesus out of my shoulder with all of that recoiling mass of the barrel and bolt.

Remington 11 was made on the 1900 Browning Patent.

I don’t, and I know how to swap the friction rings and cone ring for light or heavy loads. It still beats the snot out of me, even with light target loads.

Maybe I’m just a wimp.
