Massive Russian Wheat Exports Leading To Domestic Bread Shortages
Tzarism ^

Russia may face a domestic bread shortage in certain markets due to massive wheat exports this year as Russia morphs into an international food superpower. Cities such as St. Petersburg may not have sufficient wheat shipments as the transportation capability is being used to get export wheat to ports.

+++ The excessive number of carriages allocated for exports is depriving the St. Petersburg milling industry of its own – damaging supply chains, driving up prices and creating a shortage of bakery products, the St. Petersburg governor writes. The letter was sent after St. Petersburg’s most important wheat suppliers, the Orenburg, Saratov, Samara, Novosibirsk and Omsk regions, were included in a list of priority regions for grain export,” writes The Moscow Times.

Even the Soviets weren’t stupid enough to tolerate bread shortages for very long.

Bread shortages are not good for stable governments. Learn history Vladimir.

They used to blame the weather.

We blame Global Warming for this sort of thing.

But I guess it’s not personal. Just business. Poorly done.

It really is remarkable.

Centrally planned economies work so well, always...

We’ve cut off their oil export money, so they are exporting their food to fund their defense industry. Sounds just like a fat little Korean leader who shares a border with them.

Grain surpluses were not typical in the Soviet era. This is privatization manifesting itself. If/When the Ukraine gets their economy in order they may become the bread basket of Europe again.

Yes, the Soviets gave their land away and shot the poorly performing farmers in the head.

The Ruble is getting killed.

That’s one of the main factors that got Khrushchev removed from power, bread shortages.

Many of the comments here indicate that some of you do not understand the vast gulf between the soviet era and now. Russia is a modern democracy and is in several respects in better shape than the US.

There are not going to be bread shortages in Russia. This article is silly hyperventilation.

Indeed, this headline seems stupid on the face of it. Looking at details, it simply indicated that domestic trucking capacity seemed to be focused on exports at this point, driving up costs elsewhere.

Guess what - here in the USA, FEMA is driving up trucking costs because they are paying stupid money for freight capacity to ship into Houston area. No different here.

Russia exports grain because it has massive amounts of land and is very efficient at growing it. Meanwhile the country is importing 200-300 MT of gold per year for its reserves. Russia also has no net debt, unlike America’s $20 trillion.

It is also notable that Russia's bumper crop did not consist of GMO "franken-seeds".
