If I were Donald Trump, I think that right this very minute I would be instructing my staff to find a way I could reverse the legalization of bump stocks administratively, either via an executive order or by instructing the ATF to reverse its 2010 decision approving them.
This would have all sorts of benefits:
- Trump gets the credit, denying any Democrat that pleasure; - Trump drives the news media absolutely insane, as they desperately search for a way to condemn him for doing exactly what they want done; - Trump demonstrates to the public yet again that he can get things done outside of the normal morass of the DC Swamp; - Trump shuts down any further debate on restricting firearms for the time being.
You’ll certainly get sued by angry AR-15 owners, but even if you ultimately get overruled by the Supreme Court 5-6 years from now, who cares? You’ve taken action, done the right thing in the eyes of most Americans, and driven every progressive idiot in the entire country stark, raving mad while doing so.
It’s a win, win, win for everybody but the Democrats, the news media and a handful of semi-automatic gun owners who think they just have to have a machine gun.
I’m not for gun control, and completely against negotiating with Democrats on the subject, but bump stocks aren’t guns, and this approach would involve no Democrat input at all. Just sayin’.
Go for it, Mr. President. There is no downside here.

Trump should make it about saving lives. Tie the bump stock issue to abortion. Give them the bump stock ban for the ban on abortions after 20 weeks.

Not only do guns NOT kill people, but plastic parts of guns like bump stocks also don’t leap up out of their boxes and attack anyone.
If bump stocks are banned, what's to stop 3-D printing of guns or other attachments created illegally underground to semi-automatics that make weapons fully automatic?
Thousands of laws didn't stop Paddock, or whoever where his accomplices or set-up men was per reports from 4chan, from mowing down nearly 600 people.

Totally agree with you. The beauty of the approach I suggest is you rob the Democrats and the news media of the issue, but human ingenuity will always find a way to improvise.
This is not about gun control; this is about winning the issue and defeating the scumbag democrats.
I’m pretty sure the answer to this question is no. When you read the ATF’s approval letter from 2010, their whole rationale is that the bump stock is an accessory, not a part of a firearm. Given that, I’m pretty sure the bump stock must be sold separately from the gun itself.

A ban on bump stocks will have no effect. People will be turning them out on 3-D printers. Even if one could fabricate them, would a gun owner want them? For those who have used them, they make guns highly inaccurate. They are not good for self defense where you want to hit your target as quickly as possible before they kill you.
Don’t give the anti gunners anything. They don’t have the votes to pass a damn thing without a bunch of Republicans switching. I say a bunch cause you know the three women that vote Dem.

The question that would come after that would be: Since you can do without the bump stock, what is the problem with not having them, then?
How about a new idea. Republicans start acting like they are the majority party and quit letting Democrats run things!
You don't even need a rubber band—although that might help a little bit.
All you need is a little practice and, for instance, some pants with a belt loop in them. That's it.
They will take "bump stocks" today, cause companies and people's livelihoods to be destroyed, and tomorrow, they will come back for Glock and Daniel Defense and Smith & Wesson. Because Democrats NEVER NEVER NEVER give up on gun bans.
