There has been a lot of talk the past few years about smart gun technology as an option for keeping the wrong people from using firearms. Maybe youve heard of the German-made Armatix iP1 handgun. This smart gun can be defeated with $15 worth of magnets.
The idea is that the pistol can only be fired by someone wearing a wristwatch-style RFID device. But now, a hacker has found several major flaws with the technology. Watch the fascinating and troubling report in the video from Wired.
Interestingly enough, the hacker not only found multiple ways to fire the gun without the watch being present, he also found ways to PREVENT it from firing, even with the watch present. That last detail probably wont go over well with gun owners that are usually looking for reliability.
The news about a smart gun being hacked with something as simple as magnets will likely not be good for Armatix. They've made smart guns in 9mm and .22. But they haven't been received very well here in the U.S. Read and see the rest of the story and video on smart gun story here.
Smart guns are a stupid idea.
I think it could be a smart idea if it works. But they have a long way to go apparently.
I’m going to stick with my dumb guns.
I don’t want them thinking for themselves.
If you cannot disarm the sheeple then only allow them to buy guns that don’t work.
You are in the shower. You hear someone breaking into your house. You grab your gun to defend yourself. You get shot while looking for your watch.
This is a really stupid idea. Just teach kids about gun safety.
Technology is very theoretical in its application sometimes. I saw a shot amusing video of a drone being totaled by a roll of toilet paper was thrown at it.
Very interesting, thanks. Clearly the mannufacturer did not do sufficient FMEA, or just chose to ignore these vulnerabilities. Even the kind of home alarm system you buy at the big box stores provides a higher level of security than this.
We've done away with morality.
We need Magnet Control.
SENSIBLE Magnet Control.
Having to wear an RFID device on the wrist sounds like Major Flaw #1.
I added banglist to the keywords. You should have.
Folks who think that way won’t get a weapon like this. But there are plenty of others who would if it worked. I’m in favor of giving gun owners the widest range of choice in the hardware they use.
And besides, the watch idea is just the latest iteration of this technology. At some point someone might come up with a secure weapon that doesn’t use a watch or other counterpart device. I’ve heard about guns with fingerprint readers for example. Obviously those have problems with them as well but this is just the start of these R&D efforts. Which is why I say “if it worked...”
