When you spend lots of money on a gun safe, you’d imagine if it was theft proof. I can’t even begin to count the number of different gun safe brands out on the market right now. From super inexpensive options that are perfect for the hunting cabin, to extremely high-end super heavy duty safes that are a work of art on the outside, there's a gun safe for every application.
As sad as it is, watch Tom from Secureit Gun Storage using a tool which only cost 10 bucks can get you into some of the heaviest gun safes.
One of the big tip is if your home gun safe has relatively thin sidewalls, you might want to consider boxing it into a corner, so that the door is the only exposed piece. For additional security, be sure to bolt the safe to the floor from the interior, it will definitely make a big difference! See the traditional gun safe fail footage here.
If you have the time.
Adding a huge amount of weight at the bottom will also make it that much more fun for the bad guys to try to take the safe away without opening it. Barbell weights work good.
A bad guy with a gun in your three-year old’s ear can get it open for free.

There are dozens of videos on youtube showing how to do a gun safe peel using a chisel, crowbar and sledge hammer. Most can do it under 10 minutes.
Agree...but I figured that’s a given. I was noting a cheaper way to add more weight.
Gun safes are primarily to protect young kids and other unauthorized persons from getting at guns. A dedicated thief is going to get in. The good thing is most thieves are not dedicated and are looking for a quick getaway.
Well sure - if the safe is sitting in the middle of the room. How about if you don’t know where the safe is? And, it is bolted to the foundation? And there is no access to the sides?
My safe is in the corner. I need to wall the one exposed side. And the top too, though there's slim clearance from the top to the ceiling. 52" wide, 40" deep, 89"tall. All 3/16" plate, except the 1,200 lb Vault door.
I got the door on Ebay for $100 and built the rest. I hired some high school wrestlers to help me get the door home.
Layers.
A safe is a final layer in your security system. ( talking about theft primarily)
Your curtilage perimeter, house int/ext illum and alert, access doors windows & locks, interior alarm w/ video and then the safe.
Usually the exterior stuff is enough to deter most thieves, maybe not in rural areas, then add a fence and a gate with links to your alarms.
I have assisted folks in a comprehensive plan for under $5k. The people in the house are more important than the things, of course, but a system protects all if used.

Gun safes are for the protection of young children and liberals. They aren’t going to protect your assets from a determined criminal.
Beat me to it. Gun security begins with insuring that they are known to as few as possible. This includes smuggling in or out of one’s home as needed.
Don’t even don hunting togs & boots until you’re in the field.
Safes like locks only keep honest folks honest.

With 3/8” steel, they were designed to keep amateurs out.
Above that, any professional will get in with enough time and tools.
It seems the newer generation of cheap safes are much thinner.
