I’m in favor of conventional removal NOW.

In the future, I’d launch a pre-emptive nuke strike if I thought they were preparing to deploy an EMP device.

Wouldn’t it be fortuitous if the Nork satellites ran into some space debris?

I thought the thing blew up on launch or something.

I really doubt that NK would launch an EMP attack against China or Russia. The immediate aftermath would the Island of South Korea.

The only agent who could create an EMP attack which could devastate modern society is the sun. A repeat of the 1859 event would create untold chaos.

Guess NKor didn’t get the memo that the power companies have been installing newer surge traps in all high voltage distribution to protect beyond direct lightening strikes. They’ve been doing this for +10 years now.

The “One Second After” book scenario is Hollywood. Wiring length is critical to achieve signal (EMP) gain sufficient to damage circuitry. Your watch will be fine. Your car will be fine. Your phone and most electronics not plugged into the wall will be fine. If you have a whole house surge trap at your breaker box like I do then your fine.

72 kilometers is the optimum burst height for a 10-Kt warhead making an EMP attack.

Pure BS. The author of this nonsense is making up "facts" wholesale.

An EMP attack is certainly serious business, but this scare mongering BS is laughable at best.

Exactly, more EMP nonsense.
Funny they never talk to anyone from Sandia Labs or Lawrence Livermore on weapons design.

“On April 30, South Korean officials told The Korea Times and YTN TV that North Korea’s test of a medium-range missile on April 29 was not a failure, as widely reported in the world press, because it was deliberately detonated at 72 kilometers altitude.”

Yeah, I meant to do that.......

I think you mean “satellite killers”. And yes, we do. Even Aegis can shoot down satellites with SM-3s.

If the US ever has reason to believe that there’s an EMP satellite in orbit, they’ll shoot it down. And be fully in their rights to do so, because WMDs in space are banned by the Outer Space Treaty.

“Sub launch. They have them.”

Not exactly. “Sub launch: they’re developing them” would be more accurate. The current state of NK sub launch technology was that their last test was from a towed platform (not a sub), and only tested ignition, and for a missile sized too small to be an ICBM - and they don’t even have a ground-based ICBM working yet.

North Korea will be a severe threat to the US mainland if left alone. They’re actively working toward becoming one. But they’re not there yet.

Unfortunately, most people do not understand the effects of an EMP.

“Maybe you can explain how we have had hundreds of nuclear tests without anything more than some very weak EMP effects on occasion. Do you think NK have magical technology?”

While this “EMP apocalypse” stuff is overwhelmingly fearmongering, your framing is not accurate either. Nuclear explosions for EMP must be delivered at high altitude - . The US has only done a few tests on this (such as Starfish Prime), and only in remote sections of the Pacific, far from the US mainland.

Why at altitude? Because an EMP is, by definition, electromagnetic; to create it, you need moving ions. In Earth’s lower atmosphere, the X- and gamma-rays are almost instantly absorbed by the atmosphere, forming a heat blast. While this is a plasma until it dissipates, it’s a quasineutral plasma, aka, no net charge. In the upper atmosphere, however, the radiation ionizes the sparse gases, creating a huge flux of high energy electrons that can travel significant distances before colliding with anything. Their movement across Earth’s magnetic field leads to a rapidly propagating distortion in the field that induces currents in long conductors at the surface as it passes over them. This is the E1 pulse. There’s also the slower E2 pulse and the even slower E3 pulse.

The short of it: the US’s numerous ground-based tests are not going to induce a relevant EMP because the radiation is almost immediately thermalized. Bombs have to be detonated high up to cause an EMP.

I’m pretty sure the Chinese would not take kindly to a nuke exploding at 55 miles up directly over NORKlandia.

Read up on EMP and solar flares. The effect is created when the radiation passes through the earths magnetosphere. It’s real, whether or not NK has the capability is another matter all together.

Those who do not understand, or doubt the effects of an EMP strike, take a look at his video, and read this book.

Completely knocking out the Western United States by detonation one high enough over San Francisco would do the trick too. The fat ugly one doesn’t have to attempt Denver.

A fantasy at best...They have to get one over here, they have to Launch it, then it has to reach altitude. If it could be done, the muzzies would have done it years ago....enjoy your fear porn and manipulation....
