Being Forced to Buy the Textbook "Sex and World Peace" (Vanity, Millennial Rant)
Book Link ^ | March 10, 2017 | Ulmius

Posted on 03/10/2017 3:11:36 PM PST by Ulmius

Here I am on a Friday, waiting on a pizza, with a quiz due at midnight. It is true I haven't studied for this quiz yet, nor will I until the very end. However, most of the reason I have not done so is because I have not yet bought the textbook needed for next few weeks.

I am 21 and working on an online undergraduate degree in International Studies, and I am paying for it with my own money that I have saved. This semester's bill for three classes, each worth three credit-hours, cost me over $3,000, and I have less than $25,000 in the bank. I am waiting to get my graduate degree (or doctorate perhaps) in linguistics, but my work situation doesn't let me attend a brick-and-mortar institution, so I chose the closest online bachelors' degree I possibly could to foreign languages, which was international studies. I was expecting to learn about how different cultures, economies, and governmental systems contribute to how nations interact, but this has turned out to be only a sliver of what I am learning. The midterm I have just taken required an essay explaining my thoughts on Marxism, and the previous modules had talked in depth about Marxism, structuralist theory (basically Marxism), and some feminist theory. The articles I have been told to cite from are virtually all pro-globalist, anti-nationalist, traditional-America-bad-third-world-good.

And now, I'm expected to buy this book, which comes from Columbia University's women's studies curriculum. My hair already stands on end at the mention of "gender aggressions" or "micro-level gender violence and macro-level state peacefulness in global settings". I will agree with them that the health of a society relies on how its women are treated and that there are horrible womens' rights violations around the world; I won't mind hearing unique solutions to these issues. However, if I have to hear about the white male or Western imperialism (I'm not sure if I will yet), I'm going to scream.

It infuriates me these colleges get to shake me down the way they do. I would rather get a vocational degree than be saddled with any type of student debt, especially after seeing the horrors of what those loans can do to your future. Though mine have treated me fairly and been straight with me, I have to agree in wondering how these professors truly contribute to positive change in societies, and it sickens me to know that the $19.99 I am about to spend in iBooks for this book will fund the very leftists and trigglypuffs which detest what I stand for. On top of everything, I don't even get the normal college experience, which is more of my personal choice though. I can't even read the normal news anymore, and I am a regular listener to Michael Savage and Alex Jones, who both provide a voice of reason though I do not agree with them all the time.

These are tumultuous times, FReepers; the torch is being passed to us bit by bit. Take it from someone who is dealing with this as his future.

Regards and MAGA, Ulmius

Enjoy your pizza! I’ve never had anything near $25000 in the bank.

leftists and trigglypuffs - I have never heard ‘trigglypuffs’ - please elaborate?

P.S. The future looks bright for you, rock on!

At least it is only $19.99. When I saw “textbook” I figured you meant north of $100 for mandated filth.

Your mind is right, so you have a bright future. Hang in there. :)

Even attending an on-line university; you are going to have to swallow some pretty awful loads. Endure pure propaganda and leftist pablum.

And pay dearly for it.

My advise would be to find a Christian university that meets you career objectives and attend there.

Enjoy your pizza and good luck on your quiz tonight.

Thanks for the sentiments! It’s been more difficult for me (the funny thing is I’ve actually been turned down for being a Trump supporter one time!) because I don’t get much chance to meet girls unless I use Tinder/POF/dating sites or go to the nearest big city, which I do.

You sound level-headed and talented.

What do you expect to do with this degree?

If you are talented with languages, how about a degree in one of them?

When my youngest daughter was off to college, she was filling out some form and it asked about her vitals, height, weight, hair and eye color then there was the box marked “sex”, she wrote “never.”

It’s an old scam, requiring college students to purchase books published by a faculty member of that university, oftentimes by the professor teaching the course in question. You’ve already got sunk costs, just learn to play their game better than they do and apply this knowledge to undermine anyone remotely like them once you’re free of their malign influence.

I wanted to learn about comparative grammar, especially with the Semitic languages (I know Arabic, you can see my post history), or maybe get a job in conserving endangered languages or something with computers.

Seeing the decreased availability of jobs in this aside from academia, however, I may go into international business and kick tail.

Ain’t FR great?

I hope that link works for you. Even if it leads to an excerpt, maybe you can glom enough info to pass this quiz.

Good Luck!

My kids are going through this now - and where the prof comes out with a “New Revised Version” every fricken’ year - so you can't just buy a used one.

Other books I've seen have some tear-off page that you have to turn into the prof so he knows you bought a new one.

“So did you really need the book?”

“Not really - I suppose there was stuff in there that was good, but he only gives tests based on his lecture material.”

College is such a scam. I recall having to buy new books for some classes years ago and got pissed. BUT - I still have many of them and still refer to them once in awhile (math and chemistry). But to pay $120 for a book on “Global studies of psychology” is a rip.

My son thought that might be interesting, and learn how different people and cultures develop their brains and personalities differently from each other. Good to know in dealing in an international community.

“Yeah Dad - I thought I could really get something out of it. But it turns out that everyone else is pretty much good, it's just western white males like us that screw everything up.”

You can find all sorts of required reading online so glad a FRiend found it for you.

Also, check texts out of a library. Colleges are usually required to have X number of texts that profs require. If there isn’t a college library near by, then get it on loan from your public library. Check it out for 2 weeks and renew for another 2 weeks. Then have a friend check it out for you for the full 4 weeks. Rinse and repeat until the end of the semester.
