The New York Post reports:
State education officials plan to scrap a literacy exam given to prospective teachers
And why are they doing this? The article continues:
Sources said education officials also were concerned about the disparity between passing rates among white and minority candidates.
In 2013-14, only 48 percent of aspiring black teachers and 56 percent of prospective Hispanic educators passed, compared to 75 percent of white candidates, the website Chalkbeat reported in February.
And there you have it.
The public school bureaucrats think that when it comes to hiring teachers, racial diversity is more important than knowing how to read.
This is what happens when you put idiots in charge.
Maybe they want teachers who can do what Barbara Billingsley did in “Airplane”

Does a teacher have to be a University graduate...or is that optional now?
What does that have to do with it? You think that just because they “received” a college degree they can read, write and speak English?
You’re right; the bar has consistently been lowered for them, to the point where no private employer has any use for the resulting semi-literates. Uncle Sam steps in with fake work, and we pretend assimilation has worked. I’ve posted on other threads that without gubmint jobs black unemployment must be near 95%.
FWIW, there is a measure of job security in this for Anglos; employers (outside of the government sphere) need people actually capable of working.
Buffalo does it, or used to do it, regularly and the end result was screams of *Racism* because so many of a certain group of teachers failed a basic high school literacy test.
Same thing will happen here.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
It is amazing that these people:
1. Graduated from High School
2. Took the SAT
3. Were accepted by an accredited university
4. Spent 4 years at university and received a diploma
And still can't pass a basic literacy test...
I regard with suspicion any degree in the hands of a preferred minority (black, Hispanic, or woman); government policies make it foolish to do otherwise.
Years ago when trying to discern academic failure researchers realized the parents often weren’t much brighter than the kids; now the teachers (especially if said preferred minorities) aren’t either.
Heah, but, I have a doctorate. Why should I have to take a demeaning test?
more that the stupid indoctrinating the ignorant.
Take a look at second grade common core math. Makes my head spin. It’s a shame what this is doing to our young ones. Grandkid now hates math.
“This is what happens when you put idiots in charge.”
It wouldn’t be so serious if these people were merely idiots. They are actually corrupt, insidious, exploiters of children. So, let’s hope a voucher program is passed by the Trump’ster and the teachers unions can be finally destroyed.
You just answered your own question.
It’s nearly impossible to read anything by or about liberal problem solving that should not be labeled “satire.”
A very good question indeed. I would think that at minimum a bachelor degree would be required before one could apply to be a teacher. If that is the case then we have illiterate people being granted degrees. At one time I would have laughed at the suggestion but no more, anything is possible. I know from experience that most recent recipients of a degree in history could not pass my eighth grade history final. I doubt that you could find one who could pass my high school final, if you do you can be sure that he or she is SELF educated.
I have no doubt that Affirmative Action medical personnel are killing people regularly, and it’s probably just a matter of time until bridges and buildings collapse with AA in engineering fields.
“Ive posted on other threads that without gubmint jobs black unemployment must be near 95%.”
That sounds about right, if you stick your head into any government office around here you have to search diligently to find someone who is NOT black. Still we hear ridiculous claims of “white privilege”. At least when white privilege was the reality the white people did not go around talking about black privilege but now that the situation is reversed they pretend that it is still 1950.
You're only saying that because you believe the guy posting this thread when he says "they can't read".
I found that hard to believe, so I took a quick look at what this test actually is. Here's a summary:
FIELD 202: ACADEMIC LITERACY SKILLS TEST (ALST) TEST DESIGN
This test consists of selected-response items, followed by focused constructed-response items and an extended writing assignment based on the critical analysis of authentic texts and graphic representations of information addressing the same topic. Each item requires the analysis of complex literary or informational texts.
The selected-response items count for 40% of the total test score and the constructedresponse items count for 60% of the total test score, as indicated in the table that follows. Each selected-response item counts the same toward the total test score.
The total testing time is 210 minutes. Candidates are free to set their own pace during the test administration. The following estimates were used to determine the total test time:
Each focused constructed-response item is designed with the expectation of a response up to 20 minutes.
The extended writing assignment is designed with the expectation of a response up to 60 minutes.
The selected-response items are designed with the expectation of response time up to 110 minutes.
You can google for a more comprehensive description of the test.
Don't believe everything (or anything) some blogger spouts out.
Probably the most visible evidence is the postal service.
My town had a “settlement” with the NAACP where Newark NJ residents could take our police & fire exams while Newark’s residency requirement still stands (we can’t take their exams); this indicates that most black Americans have simply never assimilated and are still dependent on handouts.
I remember a few years back when an inner-city "educator" was interviewed. She told the reporter "I teaches English".
Don’t be surprised. This is the New York educational system.
When you look down the hole in a well-used outhouse, are you surprised by what you see?
