ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia In Barack Obamas landmark speech before the African Union in July 2015 the first by a sitting U.S. president he told the assembled heads of state and delegates that the United States was ready to be a development partner with the continent, while warning that would come along with American promotion of human rights, whether they liked it or not.
You are kind of stuck with us this is how we are. We believe in these things and were going to keep talking about them, he said to applause and laughter from the delegates.
Now a year and a half later, the African Union is grappling with a new U.S. president that has said very little about Africa but looks set to step away from decades of bipartisan investment in Africa and has advocated using torture during interrogations.
At the African Unions annual summit meeting in Addis Ababa, that concluded Tuesday, Africas leaders heatedly debated a number of issues, including who to elect as chairman, Moroccos return to the group, and whether to walk out from the International Criminal Court. But beyond the official agenda was a sense of unease over what many see as a new era of nationalism ushered in by the election of President Trump....

They contemplate a future without American (money)
I’m sure they will be disappointed more so than we will, but more power to them I say.
To the extent that Africa wants help working on addressing root causes of its problems I think they will find they have an ally in Donald Trump.
That’s more like it and Obama didn’t do a damned thing for ANY real African.
Why is it, that just about every nation in sub-Saharan Africa is a basket case????
Why is it, if having gotten rid of the legacy of colonialism, which was supposedly to blame for Africa’s problems, that these African nations are still basket cases, decades after the end of colonial rule???
A slave trade they cultivated for their own selfish political ends. They sold their own countrymen to the Europeans.
Everybody teaching this sort of things always overlooks this for some reason.
Can’t think of a reason why, but they do.
I think President Trump should cultivate black Africa, read CHRISTIAN Africa as a bulwark against Islam Muslim jihad.
The African slave trade was mostly run by muslims.
Muslims still practice slavery to this very day.
Foreign aid. Full stop. Stop helping Africa and Africa will help itself.
It isn’t necessarily a geographic thing. It’s cultural.
Somalia is a basket case because it is full of Somalians.
Haiti is a basket case because it is full of Haitians.
Quite a few of those nations were NOT “basket cases” when under white rule; however, now they are....with blacks running things.
“To the extent that Africa wants help working on addressing root causes of its problems...”
Its pretty much impossible there. And absolutely not worth the steep price it would take. Ignorance and kleptocracy has too deep of a root.
Psssssssssssssssssst....the supposed black “Christians”, in African nations aren’t really CHRISTIAN, since they have, for a very, very long time, just merged some of Christianity with tribal animism/paganism.
Here’s the problem: African is quickly falling back into tribalism—many of the wars and massacres of recent years are all due to this very issue.
And knowing Obama, that meant something about homosexuals rather than 'please stop using child soldiers'.
That’s been going on for many, many decades; nothing “new” about that.
Most of those either embraced communism or Islam when they got the “colonialists” out, with predictable results.
If you won't give us free money, we want nothing to do with you.
Fine.
buh bye
