Is There A History of Electors Being Threatened and "In Play" Like This?
12-15-2016 | Rhett October

I'm in my mid thirties, so I know I haven't seen it all, but I don't remember the topic of electors ever being an issue.

I remember Ron Paul's supporters trying to become electors to vote for him in the primary in 2012 I think it was, but I've never seen it even mentioned much in the general election.

It's like Trump has to win twice - first with the people and then with this small group of people who are receiving threats to vote for someone else. That is just so wrong. Does anyone here remember when electors actually came into play or were like a second election for a President? All I ever remember is the President being chosen on election day (except for Gore/Bush but that didn't bring electors into play).

This is just sore loser theater. It was bad in 2000, but this one is extra special fun. They should have sold tickets.

Some electors are being threatened, but they are not “in play.”

There have been a few incidents of unfaithful electors but they were minor.

I’ve never seen this happen before. This is advocating a coup.

The liberals in this country are no better than stalinists.

I would guess it’s probably happened before sometime in the 1800s, but I don’t know that for a fact. I also think you’re overstating things a little bit too. I don’t think that a significant number of Trump electors are really in play or ever were.

There have been electors getting loose, like in 1960 when 15 electors bolted and voted for Harry Byrd (Kennedy still won), but I don’t remember electors being cajoled like this. (I’m in my 60s.) It’s a threat to our democracy, as Hillary Clinton said, not to accept the outcome of the election.

I recall reading here a month or so ago about the election at the end of the Grant administration. There was not a “clear winner” so a deal was worked out to compromise, end Reconstruction and bring the troops home (from the South) and Hayes could be sworn in. Smoke filled back room deal.

Actually, I now recall that the 1960 election involved Harry Byrd being supported by unpledged electors (Alabama and Mississippi). I think only one elector actually bolted and voted for him (Oklahoma). In 1968 an elector in NC voted for Wallace.

It is the same hysterical theater in the media that we have seen throughout the campaign. I would not get too excited about it nor would I worry about some crazy turn of events.

Their “Camelot II” is dying before their eyes and they simply cannot accept it. They also can’t accept that it was a complete flop from start to finish.

Trump needs to remain focused on what he is doing - “winning.” That will speak far more loudly than anything else he can do and it will reinforce how absurd the media has become. They can talk all the smack they want and watch their ratings plummet - Trump can smile and point to the scoreboard.

Personally, I am still enjoying the tears and the beautiful sunrise in the East. I am sure we will all disagree at some point with a few things here and there, but overall I could not be happier at this moment in our nations history. Buckle your seatbelt FReepers - this is going to be a fun ride and don’t let the angst of the daily news cycle get you down!

Trump had to win FOUR times:

1) Win the nomination
2) Get the delegates he won to actually vote for him to become the candidate
3) Win November 8
4) And now, win on Dec 19

I’m 55 and I don’t remember any similar shenanigans, but the current BS may be more of an internet artifact than reality.

Also the internet has allowed idjits in geographically distant regions to find and reinforce their stupidity, magnifying it’s appearance and effect.

It also allows them to find and share the elector’s names and addresses with a few clicks so they can inundate them with messages.

This was practically impossible to do when there was only print methods of communication and media news.

Never forget that the MSM has a vested financial interest in torrid headlines and fomenting poor behavior so they can report it.

Polite society has yet to catch up with technology. The fact that Trump won, however, shows that it has at least woken up and taken the first step toward reasserting itself over the barbarians

I am 72 and I first started voting in 1966. I do not recall anything like this. I have never seen an assault on the Electoral College like what is going on now.

I’ve never heard of anything like this. I’ve been keeping up with politics since Carter.
