How Could the Polls be So Far Off?

The citizens of this country lied to the pollsters

The post-mortem on the 2016 election has now begun (and will probably continue for the next dozen election cycles) trying to identify for both Democrats and Republicans how badly the polls performed. The questions will all be variations on a simple premise: How could our pollsters have failed us so badly?

They weren’t wrong...they were gaslighting us, or at least trying to. It didn’t work.

I can think if a few reasons:

1. Ongoing issues with getting enough responses by phone to conduct an accurate poll.

2. Issues with more people just not answering phones nowadays.
3. Issues with people not responding to pollsters.

4. Problems reaching people on cellular phones vs. Landline phones.

5. Pollsters using inaccurate estimates of mix of voters when they do projections.

6. Pollsters who are liberal and want to show a certain result. I remember over the summer, Reuters announced they were using a new polling methodology, and then suddenly their polls miraculously showed Hillary with a comfortable lead.

Because they were shilling for Hillary, demonizing Trump and his supporters, and lying to their readers. Consequently, their audience believed all the lies and couldn’t imagine that the outcome would be Trump winning. Result: total meltdown on Tuesday night.

On Kennedy

They claimed the Pollsters used the 2012 Models

That the Media thought they could shame people not to vote for Trump and make the 2012 numbers work

The Exit Polls had Hillary being named President Elect by 9 PM and the Senate going Democratic.

However Trump saved the Senate by pulling Ron Johnson in Wisconsin and Tomney in Pennsylvania.

He would have gotten Kelly Ayotte had Massachusetts came across state line and stole New Hampshire

All good reasons. I think they made the same mistake Romney made last time -- they misjudged who'd actually vote and who wouldn't.

The split between the candidates was within the usual margin of error for polls, but the fact that virtually all underestimated Trump's support suggests that they all discounted or undercounted the same groups in the population.

I don’t buy this “they lied to the pollster” theory. My theory is much simpler. I think the old techniques of calling people on landlines can’t statistically model likely voters.

Because the pollsters and media were colluding with the DNC to suppress Republican voter turnout?

Be nice! Many pollsters are honest, decent, hardworking (VERY hard working!) and patriotic Americans. It’s the scumbags who get the network coverage though.

They did it on purpose.

They dialed into Democrat strongholds so Clinton would get the boost, fill in with a few Republicans and voila. They ushered the money would flow into Clinton’s hands.

Except the whole “have a lot of money, win election” thing didn’t exactly work.

The pollsters are screwed.

Because polling companies tell journalists what they want to hear so they'll keep buying their polls?

It's 21st century astrology and is about as firmly based in science.

The polls weren’t wrong. They were weaponized.

The pollsters were paid to produce a result.

Their failure was funded.

All the pro-Clinton polls got everyone on America’s side so freaked out that it actually helped turn out voters for Trump.
