This week in Vietnam, President Rodrigo Duterte told a collection of Filipinos his government would cease training with the U.S. following the upcoming PHIBEX 33 amphibious exercises off Luzon next month. So Im serving notice now to the Americans. I will maintain the military alliance, the RP-US pact which our countries signed in the early 50s. During this meeting he called for expanded trade relations with China and Russia.
During the planned exercise--PHIBEX 33some 1,400 U.S. service members based in Okinawa, Japan will work side-by-side with 500 Philippine Armed Forces personnel to improve capabilities and more efficient operations during a natural disaster or armed conflict. Additional exercises between the U.S. and the Philippines
While on the Presidential campaign trail, Duterte indicated he would keep the enhanced defense cooperation agreement (EDCA) with the United States. He was aware that the presence of the U.S. Military in the Philippines would boost its defenses against Chinas encroachment.
China is a major trading partner for the nation and the weakness of Americas Leadership in any diplomatic confrontation with China may require the Philippines to severely curtail American military presence in the region.
President Duterte views the United States with a certain level of hostility. This stems from the complicated and mysterious explosion at the Evergreen Hotel
Yet if Duterte believes he can halt Chinas expansion in Philippine waters by reducing U.S. presence in the country, he just may tell the United States to leave.
Such a move would greatly impact the U.S. presence in the region and could severely diminish freedom of navigation in the South China sea. If the United States longtime ally turns to China or Russia it would seriously undermine the creditably of Washington in South East Asia, thus surrendering disputed territory and oil to China.

This president is hated by many foreign leaders.
Did the U.S. build the military bases in the Philippines? Do we give the Philippines monetary support?
Not hated.
Disrespected.
He’s not an American, the people they respected and admired.
So they just sneer and walk away.
Cant say I blame them.
Subic Bay 2b PLAN preserve..?
I would bet a lot of Taiwanese and Japanese are pretty worried about now.
Duerte and the Chinese have a similar anti-drug dealer methodology. It would not be surprising for them to have closer ties.
I am sure the Chinese would love to have an exclusive blue water navy port in the Philippines.
Duterte might be changing sides and will start cozying up to the Ruskies and China.

With Obama leading the pack of them!
So, you agree that Duterte is a P.O.S.
Depends on how you define, “P.O.S.”.
Just another example of what this Leader called out a few weeks ago when he called Obama an “SOB”. He probably isn’t on the Clinton Foundation Contributor list so he gets nothing. Got to Pay to Play.
The US military has too many rules to follow. Japan doesn’t.
red
Excrement under your shoe.
Don’t know enough about him to agree.
If Duterte sees that the US is not going to defend the Phillipines against China then he needs to align the Phillipines with Chinese aims.
Just wait till China takes another shoal/islet....
he will come begging
How the Leftist government media complex presents him and the reality of who he really is are two separate realities.
He’s popular in the PI because he’s going after corruption and drug lords. I read yesterday from someone in the PI that he recently fired his “FBI” (what would be like our FBI) director for taking drug bribe money.
