It’s Easy to Become a “Scientist”—there’s an App for that!

Suffice to say that neither being a U.S. Senator nor signing a petition by the UCS makes you a scientist. That "App" needs (much) more work!

No need for you to feel “scientifically challenged” anymore; there’s an App for nearly everything now. It appears that one of the easiest ways to become a “scientist” (concerned or not, my personal view) is to join the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). That group has already millions of members (so it claims) and you are most welcome to join. No experience or other credentials required—if anything, just a few dollars from your wallet.

Really; I’m not kidding. The UCS is just one of several so-called “widely recognized scientific bodies” that pretend to know what’s good for you and everyone else on earth. And it’s so easy to join and to become another one of their many “scientists,” concerned or not. You can endorse any of their many campaigns by adding your name, address and contact (email) information, and (may also add) a small donation to support their latest outcry over what is being claimed to ail the world.

"I'm a scientist, She's a scientist, He's a scientist, wouldn't you like to be a scientist too?"

I noted more than thirty years ago that the only qualification required to join the Union of Concerned Scientists was to be able to write a check for $25 which a US bank would honor.

You can also write like an "Academic."

Write your own academic sentence

"The reification of praxis is virtually coextensive with the historicization of the public sphere."

Thanks for sharing the article. This reminds me of a funny thing that happened years ago. While waiting to be relieved by the oncoming shift, I was arguing with a fellow member of the Hazmat Team in front of our coworkers about some of the finer points of global warming. He was losing the argument so he blurted out that he was a scientist and that I was not.

It was true that he had a degree in a science related field and once had a job cleaning lab equipment. But we were all on the Hazmat Team together and everyone in the room had at least some college level training. This guy had a history of not doing what he was told to do on scene, panicking under pressure, and causing confusion by making up a revised sequence of events at reviews. Everyone in the room just started laughing and he was mocked over the comment for months.

Unfortunately, when you read comments and articles from people on the internet it is much more difficult to gauge their actual level of competency. So people who deserve to be mocked for trying to win an argument with an appeal to authority often get away with it.

I had to bookmark the link you provided... too funny!

The reification of the natural is strictly congruent with the fantasy of linguistic transparency.

FOr years I’ve been calling them “The Union of Communist Scientists.” It’s what they are—total front group.
