Feral swine are considered pest species in many countries, including the U.S. They reproduce fast and destroy billions of dollars worth of agriculture and live stock each year.
Now more than ever, hunters are trying to kill wild pigs as fast as they can. But there are some dangers.
Wild pigs are exactly that - wild. They can be very aggressive, and when hunters get too close, they'll charge fast. If they make contact with a hunter, they'll often bite hard with their razor sharp teeth. See the wild pig video here.
This is news?
That’s what .44 or .357 magnums are for!
If you have never gone wild boar hunting with a bow, you haven’t lived.
Feral hogs are a big problem is South Texas. I see packs of them quite often. They are shot on sight.
I’ve heard they aren’t that wonderful to eat either, because of the flavors imparted to the meat by their own food. But they could be great cat or dog food, I’d think. Purina Cat and Dog Chow hunting squads, that would be an idea.
Hunters be careful with these pigs, lest your prey hunt you. The animal kingdom strikes back.
Bow hunting these dangerous creatures at extremely close range without at least a sidearm is nothing less than foolhardy.
BTW it’s not the bite you have to worry about....It’s being gored with their large bottom tusks.
They can rip a bone deep gash in your leg from ankle to knee.
If you go hunting wild boars with only a bow, you may not live.
Some folks might consider that more fair. The boar gets to hunt you too.
Hey, Aussies like banjo too!
The javelina around here are also vicious. The big males or the females with pups will charge you. They seem to run in packs or families. We don’t walk the dog after dusk or too early.
No not news but fun.
I have killed a lot of wild pigs a darn good time.
Or possibly died...
or been gored or bitten by a wild boar! :)
As Obidiah stated, a sidearm is essential just in case.
Incidentally why haven’t I heard of “boar birth control” solutions. Baits that have contraception in them. The boars will not succeed in breeding, resulting in fewer boars next year. Assuming their acceptance can be limited to just the boars and not other wildlife that we don’t want to limit the breeding of.
HA! No joke. If you want the living you-know-what scared right out of ya, here you go. And that’s IN the bed of a pick up.
That guy’s CRAZY. Got surprised or not very bright.
Exactly, it is a charge. Plus the added benefit of thinning out piggies and some extra bacon. The millennial doofuses in my office are aghast that I do it saying stupid stuff like “ooh extreme biking is so much more challenging”. Idiots.
Heard someone say once about javelinas to just shoot the charging sow; then gather up the piglets, pen them, fatten them, & later enjoy some tender good eating.
