Following the mysterious death of seven cattle near an oil field in Kansas, public health authorities are investigating whether oil drilling could be the cause.
In late December, seven dead cattle were found near an oil field in the Cimarron National Grassland, Kansas, and authorities believe that cows inhaled something toxic, prompting them to deny public access to the 2,500-acre Cimarron National Grassland until at least May.
Six of the cattle were discovered together in a low-lying area, while a seventh was found a short distance away, with local veterinarians identifying the ingestion or inhalation of something toxic leading to pulmonary edema or fluid in the lungs as a possible cause, though the cause of death has not been officially declared.
More specifically, they suspect the cattle may have inhaled hydrogen sulfideâa toxic gas that can be released in the oil and gas drilling process. They havenât pinpointed the cause officially, but it was enough to implement an emergency order to halt public access to the area for a prolonged period.

There have been oil wells in this nation for around 130 years...with very few cattle deaths. I would call this a rare anomaly.
"Cattle mutilations are up this month".
I had dead cow for dinner last night - I regret it did not come with an autopsy - so string me up for contributing to the extinction of cows.
I would be curious if any crop-dusting took place the days prior to that in the nearby area.
In the meantime, 6 billion PEOPLE are being fed, clothing, and sheltered with the products, energy, and productions only made possible BY fossil fuels.
EVERY plant on earth is growing 12% to 26% faster, taller, and higher and more productive BECAUSE of the CO2 newly released by our use of fossil fuels.
The increase in CO2 alone and the longer growing seasons made possible by recent global average temperature increases are responsible for FEEDING almost 1.5 billion of those 6 billion people now living better, more comfortable lives.
But 6 cows died in one field one time. That is a news article to Obola’s national press corpse.
H2S is a silent killer. As long as you can smell it, you are OK. But in lethal concentrations, it dulls your sense of smell and it’s lights out.
Johnson grass would be my first suspect.
Just a guess but sounds like moldy hay.
I would be interested to know if any anti drilling fanatics were anywhere near those cows just before they died. I have no doubt that they would sacrifice a few animals to further the cause, just as peta is happy to kill hundreds, if not thousands of pets to keep them from being re enslaved by unenlightened humans.
Yes, Hydrocyanic acid “Prussic”
MFO
Aliens???
The Cimarron N.G. is essentially co-located in the Hugoton natural gas field that’s been in production since early in the 20th Century. It was a major source of helium in WW2. Recent exploration has probably opened new formations for production but H2S was not a usual artifact of production out there for over 80 years. That doesn’t mean the oil companies don’t maintain a high awareness of it and train their personnel to detect it. In the 1960s,my dad had a few wells in south-central KS that produced some H2S and signs were posted but the concentrations were considerably less than when the wells first came on line in the 1940s.
I'm surprised no one has rushed in to blame ethanol. ;')
Nasty, evil stuff! Bane of mankind it is!
(Too bad you can't smoke it or brew it into something intoxicating - then people would come dig it up for free!)
I have never seen seven cattle.
I have seen seven cows, bulls, heifers, steers or calves or combinations thereof.
I have seen seven head of cattle.
Maybe it’s a Kansas or mid western thing.
Do you think just maybe it was bad hay or maybe rye or wheat grass bloat? It IS about that time of year.
I see some rancher looking for a payday.
My brother let six momma cows get into the range pellet feeder just free choice. They all died. Looked like pulmonary edema as well and a whole lot of bloat. Dug a big hole and buried them but we had a rain and their legs started to surface so he went out and cut them off with a chain saw. Really. I still laugh about that.
If it was in the lungs it was probably mold from something they were fed.
Cows and horses are no different than people when they breath in mold and grain dust.
Lungs fill with fluid.
One of the reasons for putting molasses on oats for horse feed, keeps the dust down so they don’t breath it in.
If it was gas leaking from a well they would be able to find it.
Leaks don’t fix themselves so it would still be leaking.
