Volcanic eruptions have occurred at their highest rate in 300 years, and experts caution that there could be a massive "super-volcano" with the potential to kill millions and destroy substantial amounts of wildlife. Scientists at the European Science Foundation said super-volcanoes could erupt within the next 80 years, reported the Tech Times.
Researchers said the active volcanoes that could prove to be the most dangerous are Yellowstone in Wyoming, Mount Vesuvius in Campagnia, Italy, and Popocatépetl near Mexico City. If any of the three erupt, the damage would be "beyond the imagination of anything manâs activity and global warming could do over 1,000 years," according to the researchers.
In the report, titled "Extreme Geo-hazards: Reducing the Disaster Risk and Increasing Resilience,â scientists predict that the Yellowstone volcano will erupt within 70 years and will have the potential to wipe out a considerable amount of the western United States.

Or it could be a small eruption or eruptions across the caldera.
The obvious solution is Socialism and third world immigration...
“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”
HL Mencken
So now there's a time of year in which volcanoes become active? I never knew that........
Every question answered. Yes, it would be a civilization ending moment, but that moment is likely going to occur long after humanity will have no fear from it.

Click-bait - just a bare outline at site - no real info, limited speculation.
Does not address effects of a Yellowstone event on the rest of the world; conflates several other minor volcanoes eruptions with a Yellowstone event. Fails to mention Yellowstone’s active mate in western Siberia, Russia. Ignores possibility of the dormant super volcano in North Dakota, USA becoming active again.
Talk about GoreBull Warming!
That one is news to me, and I live in North Dakota. Got a link/more info?
Does not list either the Siberian or Deccan Traps events which released 10 times the amount as the largest Yellowstone event over a period of 30 centuries ... covered millions of square miles to depths of hundreds of feet.
There are links a video and a picture. If you want a science study from an item posted in Blogs then click the link there.
No I do not - but it was discovered many years ago while dino hunting - wiped out many in the area - was something on History or Discovery also. Will look around if I find more in my files I’ll post it for you.
It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel FINE!
Just calling it what it is: click-bait. There are far better articles on the same subject elsewhere.
yes and there is nothing we can do about it.
Erik Klemetti, vulcanologist at Denison University ends ‘Keep an Eye Out for These Volcanoes in 2016’ with
(P.S. One volcano that has nearly zero chance of an eruption in 2016? Yellowstone. Take that to the bank.)
That’s either a blessing or a curse (jinx)

Here is a question for my knowledgeable fellow Freepers: In Iceland they have tapped into the geo-thermal layer for both heat and power. Could we not do the same? After all the Yellowstone Caldera has enormous energy, useful if harnessed.
One could always encourage further reading regardless.
That's my favorite kind of disaster. It's like when you hear a child having a hellacious tantrum, and you realize it's NOT YOUR KID.
