OH: Another Sheriff asks Permit Holders to Carry Their Guns
Gun Watch ^ | 9 December, 2015 | Dean Weingarten

In the weeks following the San Bernardino massacre, several Sheriff's and Police Chiefs have called for people who can legally carry arms to carry them for increased security of themselves and others.  Law officers as diverse as Detroit Police Chief James Craig of Detroit and Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County in Arizona have asked people who can legally carry firearms to carry at all times that they are out and about.

Now Sheriff Helmig of Ohio has added his name to the growing list.  The concept is not new.  It is as old as mankind and has been recognized as effective for all of history, less the last hundred years, when "progressive" propagandists have attempted to convince everyone who they wish disarmed, that disarmed people are "safer" than people who are armed.  They may well be "safer" for those who wish to rob and kill them.  As the propagandist's stranglehold on the media cartel is loosening, voices or reason are being heard above the incessant and increasingly ineffectual calls for citizen disarmament.  From the Boone County Sheriff Facebook page:

I have reminded my current and retired Deputy Sheriffs of their responsibility to carry their firearms while off-duty.  I would also like to remind the people who have applied, been trained, and issued a license to carry a Concealed Deadly Weapon (CCDW) that they also have a responsibility to carry their firearm, which they are proficient with, for the safety of themselves and others. It is also the responsibility of everyone to refresh themselves with the laws that govern the privilege and great responsibility that accompany being a CCDW license holder.
Even the Police Chief in the extreme anti Second Amendment rights city of the District of Columbia acknowledged that on significant option for a citizen confronted with a terror attack was to fight.  This was the common sense approach for millennia.  It was only with the rise of the mass media and the ability to propagandise millions at a time that the idea of "safety in disarmament" was given any credence.  Police chiefs and Sheriffs in New York and the Sheriff of Milwaukee County David Clarke, are calling for armed citizens to be part of the national defensive system.

Police carry guns to defend themselves.  It is not surprising that they understand the utility of doing so.

There have always been Police Chiefs and Sheriffs that have seen the utility of armed citizens. It is the new media that is not censoring their actions and is allowing them to be seen and applauded.

I never leave my house unarmed—and I live in a “safe” area.

Many are. Two sheriffs in my area have lowered the cost of the Concealed Carry.

Me neither. I just upgraded the daily carry gun from a Ruger LCP to a Ruger LC9s. Thought I needed the additional “oomph” that the 9mm has over the .380

There is no comparison whatever between an armed and disarmed man; it is not reasonable to suppose that one who is armed will obey willingly one who is unarmed; or that any unarmed man will remain safe.... - Niccoló Machiavelli, The Prince. 1537.

Ditto - I live in a reasonably safe area, work in a facility patrolled by armed guards and dogs, and rarely go into the nearby city. But you never know when/where random acts of stupidity, evil, sharia, etc. are going to happen. That is why I carry all the time, even at home. I have a “first aid” kit in my car that goes far beyond the name. (I can treat significant trauma up to but not including intubation or administering blood expanders - yet). I carry even in places marked no firearms. In this state, such signs on regular commercial businesses carry no legal force. They are basically the same as “no shoes, no shirt, no service” - a statement of company policy not law. So I carry. I noticed yesterday one business that had previously had a “no firearms” sign took it down. How about that, common sense broke out.

As do I. But one of life's great lessons is that trouble can come from anywhere at any time. Accordingly, there is never a ready weapon farther than three or four seconds reach.

Those who routinely close off their awareness by filling their ears with iPod ear buds or similar distractions will soon or late be in for some unpleasant surprises.

Excellent. I’m sure the “shelter in place” lords are grinding their teeth over this.

I spent about 3.5 hrs of rifle marksmanship training on an Ohio range yesterday. Shot up about 200 rounds of .308 win. managed three consecutive 200 yard 3 round groups of approximately 1 inch (though ost groups were averaging about 1 MOA) Not bad from a semi-automatic rifle. Ultimate conclusions of the day were: neck turning is a waste of time with an Armalite AR10t; aim small, miss small; I need to research copper equilibrium in rifle barrels; need to consider a better scope with higher magnification, probably another vortex viper pst 6-24 ffp. And the liberals think we’re untrained. LOL.

With the coming of cooler weather I discovered that my Ruger LC9, under a sweater or light jacket is NO MORE visible than the cell phone on the other side, the slight bulge being the same.
Regretably, I, too think it is time to “carry”. I liked it better when “carrying” was something we never thought of.

A really important next step for Sheriffs, in those states where their Common Law authority is recognized, is for them to deputize “All adult persons of good character”. This idea is based on several things:

1) The Sheriff is the de facto head of his counties’ militia in Common Law.

2) The Sheriff may issue a “Hue and Cry” order, urging citizens to stop ongoing crime and to catch escaped prisoners. (The oath of office for constables in Tennessee specifically mentions that it is the duty of the constable to sound the hue and cry.)

3) In some states, Sheriffs can organize both posses and declare martial law during disasters, both to warn the public and to solicit volunteer responders.

So why deputize “All adult persons of good character”?

To start with, this deputization would be entirely voluntary, but it would *require* deputies to arm themselves, again entirely voluntarily, along the lines of Kennesaw, Georgia. As the lowest level of LEO, such an order would immunize them from gun confiscation. To get around it, the federal government would have to disarm all LEOs in the state after declaring martial law in the entire state.

If authorized by the state, a Sheriff could do this if there was a riot in a city, effectively using the armed militia to maintain order, while freeing up his uniformed deputies for the important stuff.

In the instance of a terrorist attack like in Paris, or in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, such a militia could quickly overwhelm even a platoon of terrorists, if it could be rallied rapidly.

A few decades ago, to get a concealed carry permit in the county where I lived in Alabama you were placed on a list of reserve deputies who could be called to serve if the Sheriff of the county needed more ‘force’. I thought that was a good idea, at the time.

“1) The Sheriff is the de facto head of his counties’ militia in Common Law.”

No, he is not. He is elected for law enforcement which is not the militia in any way. Common Law has also been outlawed in several States including Colorado. For Colorado, 1972 was the year I believe.

The author of the piece made a mistake. There is no Boone County in Ohio. Kentucky most likely, that being said. Good for him.

I’ve never heard of it. Mayors for towns and Governor for cities, but I’ve never heard of Sheriff’s having county level martial law authority.
