Trump Is Wrong Because America Should Be A Christian Nation
First Things ^ | December 9, 2015 | Mathew Schmitz

Posted on 12/09/2015 4:00:31 AM PST by Biggirl

Every American believes his country should be Christian. For half of the population, this means the public display of Christian symbols, laws promoting those Christian teachings that don’t encumber the wealthy, and politicians who profess the Christian faith. These people understand Christianity as a set of definite beliefs tied to churches and opposed to secularism.

Yeah, what a wonderful Christian Legacy for our sons and especially our daughters!

Every American believes his country should be Christian.

No, they don't. More than half believe America should be Socialist, not Christian.

And they will be willing, if not eager, to kill you for it.

Oh, you means Christians, like the ones the Muslims routinely behead, burn, and drown?

Our founding fathers had a very good reason to separate church from state in our founding documents.

That was done from bad experiences learned prior to our form of government being established.

This is the second “First Things” article I have read this week. I never heard of “First Things” before.

This will be the last article I read from there. Too ignorant for a thoughtful reply.

Where, specifically, is that concept of “separation of church and state” discussed in the founding documents?

Being a Christian Nation does not mean being a stupid Nation.

It’s not a religious issue. It’s an issue of terrorism and economic ruin and turning us into a 3rd world culture.

“Every American believes his country should be Christian.”

I’m an American who doesn’t believe that.

I guess you don’t really understand why our government was formed in the first place. Also, why our founding fathers had no intention in founding a government like the one in England called the Church of England and its complete control of the government back then.

The founding documents establish the rights to freedom of religion, not government by religion.

Many of the founders (specifically John Adams) felt that our form of government would only be suitable for a population rooted in moral Christian principles...and no other.

The country was founded with one of its principles being freedom to worship as one chooses.
Islam is a murder cult....there should be a delineation between a religious faith and a murder cult.

Every American believes his country should be Christian.

No, we don't. Starting from such a stupid premise, the rest of the article can't be worth much.

At least some of the comments at the source are calling out the author for his obtuse garbage. He seems to be saying that Christian = Multicultural = America, but he didn’t quite connect the dots in his hurry to condemn Trump. People like Mr. Schmitz are a big part of the reason that Christianity has been all but obliterated in most of Europe.

Twenty or more years ago, First Things was a serious journal of Christian thought & theology. On the lighter side they poked fun at extreme statements & doings by those calling themselves “religious”.

Like National Review, FT has become watered down by the common culture they both exist in. Sad, really.
